Auction channel in this game is something I've never seen put to use.
How about making it Merchant only, and global. The Merchant can advertise his items and people can respond to him via tells. The Merchant can then advertise the current offer, if he so chooses, and get higher bids possibly.
So long as it can be turned off, absolutely.
I wouldn't mind seeing a command like, "List " with a list of items they have. I can see use of the auction channel but I would prob just shut it off most of the time myself.

Buyer Syntax: Catalog
Displays Merchant's currently available items, in a "list" format.
Merchant Syntax: stock [price] ...... discontinue ...... stock show
stock item: places the item in your catalog for sale. (actually considered whether a merchant wants to give prices, I mean if its written down they will get mad if he raise it.)
discontinue item: removes the item from your catalog
stock show: displays in "list" form your current catalog as your customers see it.
