How about we implement languages some of the classes? It would just be another say command. If you an elf for example you could do something like:
esay Hello Bob, how are you?
If Bob knows elven (or has comprehend languages) he will see:
Hello Bob, how are you?
Everyone else would see:
Caelai Shyr, cyrn eisi o?
You could do this for some of the more common races- elf (maybe drow would have its own language?), dwarf, giant, goblinoid, or any other really.
Also- maybe some classes would have the option to learn multiple languages upon creation. For example a bard.
Feel free to rp this yourself, no need for a hardcoded command for it. Personally I think theres little enough rp with everybody speaking the same language, much less if everyones spouting crap noone can understand.

It is already coded that way. Most of the "heroes" (us) speak common, but go to places like the illithid hive, and none of the mobs speak common, it is like that in alot of other places as well. Basically we speak common because of all our interactions with other races.
I've played a couple muds that have this, and quite frankly it is just irritating. People would use to be secretive. We have tells. Can't get much more secretive than that.
For a laugh walk through the illithid hive with comprehend language.
I up it with a Sea elves city.

How about you learn to speak English before you worry about another language.

Ohh, don't you dare say her english is bad or she will smite you with the hammer of unwritten words!
I would like to have the option to use other languages...it would be fun...could do some rp with it...however, it is not "needed" and it would surely fall at the end of that never ending list of things to do...
I remember people talking about this back in 1.0 I always thought it was a nice idea...
It'd be great if we had a larger playerbase, but as it is now I don't see it helping that much. Back in the day there was large gatherings of people in the city because people felt safe, not anymore.
Why not just get with the people and send them a code for a written encryption? It'd add rp also, and would save the IMMs from having to code in different languages for each race just so they can speak secretly to the other 4 or 5 of their kind online.
I played a mud where you had the option to speak in different languages depending on your race/class.
I.E. an Elf Psionicist could speak elf, common, or use telepathy (sleeping doesn't prevent the last one from getting through).
It was pretty cool to have that option. I.E. If I'm a drow grouped up with another drow and an Ogre we could plan the Giant's demise right in front of him!
Thieves could even get thief speak (skill) and use their fingers, causing them not to "leave the shadows" when using it.
Maybe it'd promote more pvp interaction?
there is a huge rp gain from it, but at the same time, it would be a huge sort of frustration and a pretty large barrier. and i dunno bout you, but i'd be suspicious if my groupmates started speaking a language I don't know.

That's the point, though! If they really wanted to do you harm without you knowing they can send tells back and forth to each other, like they could now.
But maybe they WANT to make you suspicious...Maybe they WANT to freak you out. Or maybe they just wanna mess with your head a bit for the fun of it.
dumb melee races would have even less if this type of thing where implemented.
I'm going to shoot the next person who says 'mer'.
There is no correlation between grammar skill/language mastery and intelligence!

so your telling me that Mr. T has the same vocal skills as Steve Jobs?

I think Celerity is refering to the fact that some "Warriors" throughout varied cultures were very well educated. No doubt there were some brutes, but not everyone... Alot of it deals with culture...so, in FL I think it deals with Race...an Elf/Half-Elf/Drow Warrior will probably be well spoken...but a Half-Orc/Orc/Ogre won't...other races, such as Human/Dwarf/Avian...it is all a matter of backstory(pretty much that applies to every char, regardless)...how you were brought up and such... MHO.
