afk protection

i've been thinking of a way to protect people who go afk. what i've come up with is this.

a command that enters you into a state where you cannot be attacked, and you cannot take any action. upon entering the command you are lagged two turns, as well as a two turn lag when exiting the state. this would prevent abuse of the state. those that enter the state should be labelled as such. for instance "_____ is here, though his mind has drifted from his body" when you enter a room or type in "look", when they input a command, it would say "____ has drifted from his/her mind." and when they return, it should say "_____ suddenly comes to his/her senses."

while in the afk state, the character cannot take action, and must exit the state by typing the command again. characters that are in the afk state would not be affected by hp/mana/move gain at ticks, to avoid abuse.

There's already an AFK state. It's called the "quit" command.

cant always quit.

My personal suggestion is to find the least traveled location you can, preferably a nowhere-room, and sit there, if you really have to idle.

Guy is running from pk-Afk real quick.

Guy is afk-Hungry dk waits right there. Yeah, eat that lag while I kill you.

there are times that you dont expect to have to idle. for example. a phone call. somebody at your door.

im not familiar with code. but is there not something that marks you as in combat?

In that case if you are not bloody (the combat mark you are hinting at), you can quit.

If you are bloody, this new AFK command won't help you much either. You have to judge which is more important to you, dealing with real life or watching your MUD char.

When I was in high school, my family members were always wondering why I was sprinting around the house all the time...

Sure. But if you go by THAT, then you can just press the quit button mentioned earlier. You said you can't always quit, that's when you can.

I still do this at times when I have to do something whilst logged in.

Unless someone is around, then I play it cool.

You should see me when I must take a piss

cant always quit.

That's the point. You are not meant to be able to just instantly avoid death's hand through quitting from the game whenever you want.

i know that pali. but it seems kinda stupid that if something comes up out of game that you cant really avoid, that theres no way to protect yourself. yes, quit works. but you cant always quit.

i thought that it could possibly be set up that it could work based on a timer. after being out of combat for a certain time, (sooner than you can quit), you can use this as a way to avoid being killed while you are afk.

Just use your client and set up a timer that fires off a command every x seconds. Set it to 7 seconds and make it use the command

quit;where

That way you will eventually quit out as soon as you are able, and you type where to avoid getting the spam lag. This is the best you will get.

What you are suggesting, while it would be nice, it would detract from the RP environment and create a command that WILL be abused.

This is exactly why my favourite classes have Camouflage or are sliths with camou.

it would have to be able to be turned on and off in an instant tho.

No. Way. Not. Now. Not. Ever.

It's life, suck it up.

This isn't complaining about a game glitch, or a bug, or something that you feel is out of wack- this is "waaaahhhhh, my parents came in the room and caught me with my mud in my hand! quitquitquitquitquitquitquitquit, damn! There needs to be an AFK command."

Only IMM have an AFK status.

actually. no. you're just being a dick.

  1. im not a kid. stop being an ***.

  2. im not saying this because ive run into the situation

  3. grow up. seriously.

EDIT: welcome to ignore

You're right. I did cross that line. And I'm all grown up to admit it.

Let me try to explain it better, and with much less sass.

You are not meant to have a direct simple way to avoid death other than the quit command. I realize real life does happen, but it's happened for 9 years now and people have gotten along just fine. You might take a few deaths along the way, but hey, that's just the way it is.

"But why does it have to be that way? Can't it change? Why must it stay the same?"

In this case, an instant-out or instant-avoid, completely goes against the atmosphere of the game from the beginning. Not everything must be changed to make it "easy" or "fair" just to pacify the few who can't simply run to a remote location and wait out your doorbell, phone call, etc.

it would have to be able to be turned on and off in an instant tho.

Do you use zMUD?

#timer

Type that and it will toggle the timer function on/off. Instant enough for ya?
