In regards to building pbase and community...

...I have an idea.

So after reading over several threads discussing new methods of attracting players, it occurred to me that some quality of life changes could go a long way.

To sum it up in one word: Socializing.

Here's what I'm proposing.

Implement a RP Zone (such as a tavern) that's completely designed to meet and interact with other players.

  • Zone would be completely flagged as no combat, no spells, and anything else that could be exploited to use/train skills.

  • Could be accessed by everyone, regardless of alignment. This could be justified story wise as to not break RP immersion albeit stretching it a bit.

  • Entrances could exist at major cities (possibly racial as well), and could only be accessed via specific teleport so as to not be abused as a means of evading PK or setting ambush PK.

  • Interactions would follow the rules of the MUD and be solely IC.

This idea could be expanded upon naturally but the core concept would be based around a social safe-zone, free of PK and training exploits, that's open to all players.

So, any thoughts?

I do not think we need such an area. If someone wants to RP he WILL RP. He doesn't need such a room to do it.

I do not like the idea of a room where people can gather and be shielded from any attacks while they are drinking their tea.

Yeah - i dislike the idea of a no combat area - its completely against the idea of FL.

I do however like the idea of having more things to focus the playerbase closer together.

I'd like to see the player versus player arena re opened. I know it was closed due to potential abuse? But with some active coding going on, is this something that could be looked at?

Another thing that you see on the some of the larger muds still around (did a bit of snooping recently) is more structured, organised RP. It would probably require some IMM attention, but not necessarily the sort of time and effort that Malch et all have had to put in to things like the age of suffering plot.

Maybe have it like every 2nd Saturday there is an 'event.' Doesn't have to be world changing, could just be an hour or so when an immortal or two jump into a half dozen mobs and send groups of people all over the game looking for specially loaded items..The items could have nice bonus on them, but be rot-death and no remove, or maybe just be restrung items that already exist, just something to give the game a bit more of a personal feel.

terrible idea. What with all the recent threads about people hiding in clan halls and other things to avoid pk. You would think this is a no-brainer. A room anyone can go in to keep their full rare suits safe? Sounds like a room for abuse. How about you make just such a room, but only naked, or otherwise non-rare wearing players can enter. If you want to RP, give up your limited 1 unique stuff.

You got to give him some credit for coming up with a idea like such, FL is a dangerous place though - which is what I like, it keeps you always on the tip of your toes, so I don't like the idea of a safetly zone.

even if such an area were one day made, you can see by the longstanding sentiment that it would mainly foster a hostile IG environment by those who are so hardcore opposed to it. but in an ideal world, the whole rares/uniques issue would be ironed out first and then a no-PK area would probably be more acceptable to the opposition.

then again, there are also those longstanding hardcore opposition to changes made to rares/uniques, so really none of this stuff is ever going to happen.

I wanna prop this person who seems rather new for throwing it out there, but I also think it's a more central problem with people just letting people just rp it out. I really have seen a dark knight stop and rp before attempting to feed his malform. If we can give up powergaming to the point of those kinds of things, people will appreciate the rp and recognize it alot more. (Obviously used the dark knight analogy as it's popular) I think the no pk room is definitely just another tool to abuse, and it would need continuous immortal watch to keep it straight. I mean, we have threads and IG notes about the milieu and stuff.

Not saying I am for a no PK room but if one were ever implemented it would need to have restrictions. Kind of like entering a guild, clan or cabal hall after battle.

I actually like his idea. However, there is quite a bit of potential for theoretical abuse. I could see it maybe having a timer on the area. Only allow you in there for like say 12 hours. Your blood could not be rushing, so you can't just go in there and hide just after combat. Maybe have an unattackable mob that you asks you if want in and it transports you to this area. Once you are in and you leave, you cannot reenter for say 1 hour of real time play. That way they cannot always loggin and sit in there. Maybe have heralds be an exception to that, as they are the more rp heavy cabal of all of them, in my opinion. Maybe even include a way to ask the "guard" if anyone is inside to rp with. I would say you should also be able to quit out there, but once you log back in you are given two ticks to leave or be recalled.

Viri proposed something like this a while ago, but it never happened. I would think it was too difficult to code in a way to prevent abuse.

FYI, hiding in clan halls is fine; hiding in Academy clan is the no-no.

Folks who want to RP over PK will do so regardless, but with something like this (restrictions of course) it might bring all of those RPers together.

As it is now, you will have sects.. THe Healers have a party destination, rangers and werebeasts might have another, Stormies want to party somewhere else, all to benefit them in case BIGBADDIE wants to interrupt the fore said PARTY.

So if it could bring all those RPers together great...

The question is.. Now all the theives and ninjas have nothing to do cause noone is in the CC's.

All the PKERS have nothing to do..

So do those folks leave, and you bring in more folks who want to sit and just RP??

why is it so hard to just meet someone in one of the stock areas to RP? There are plenty of places that are relatively safe from studying ninjas and thieves. Why does RPing for the heavy 'RPers" here have to be centered around not being able to be attacked? Can't RP and PK go hand in hand? If you want PK immunity, Why not just make a noble or a herald? Way less trouble than going about changing game mechanics by building saferooms

Its actually really easy to find an out-of-the-way place where you're guaranteed to not get disturbed for an extended amount of time. Winter, the place under Cauduin comes to mind.

Sure you won't be able to just pop down to Tamara's bar to meet your mates. But if you're going to be RPing for an extended amount of time, then its probably worth it to go to those remote locations. So far in my experience, 99% of the time when I am RPing in a remote location, the only reason I have to suddenly end it is because of the stupid cabal guard crying for help.

good thing this is an rp/pk mud. Gotta find that balance between the two.
