The arena was taken out for player battles due to abuse/bugs from what I remember...I think this would be a HUGELY good thing to bring back into the game, especially with the influx of new players we're trying to drive via voting, Arena has a lot of benefits for them.
I think it would also be awesome from a RP pov, how about Gladiator fights on a fri or sat evening - organised odds and betting etc... I'd be totally up for watching that, and maybe competing if I got a character who was right for it!

Player1 (8:49:02pm): Hey Player2, you wanna make some gold real quick?
Player2 (8:49:36pm): Sure, how?
Player1 (8:50:07pm): We'll fight in the arena. I'll have my buddy, Player3, bet a ton of gold on me, and you purposely lose the fight. Then we'll do it again so that I fight him and you can bet, then one last time so I can be able to bet as well.
Player2 (8:51:13pm): Sounds good!

The sad thing is I actually have gotten girls' screen names at parties before. I find they part with their SN a lot easier than their number, and it isn't quite as forward.

I loved the arena, and would love to see it back up and running.
As for betting, rather than have a 'set' system in place, you could have someone roleplaying as a bet-taker-person (whatever they're called!) and it would be very interesting. Especially with 'IG' cheats, like players taking dives, just like in boxing.

So BUMPing this, as it got a touch sidetracked, what are the chances of us getting the arena back for player combat? I was thinking it could be something that might fit in with Malch's idea of having weekly set times for an event..maybe Gladiator matches overseen by an IMM once a month or so?
