Disable "Me" as a target...

As it stands now, using "me" as a target will set yourself as the target of your spell. This is a huge pain in the butt when fighting people that have names starting with Me. Targeting yourself with an acid blast isn't so bad, it's the fact that it drains half of your mana in the process. I have no idea whether it is deliberate or not(The name for Mestaria, my invoker, was done accidentally.), but it is an advantage that isn't readily available to everyone.

As Mestaria, I remember a good number of people blasting themselves with their own spells very often(always got a chuckle out of me). Sometimes they'd do it repeatedly not knowing what's going on. So, as a solution, how about adding a AutoMe command that will toggle activation of the "Me" targeting variable?

I like it.

Theres a certain drow running around that when I fought, had this happen to me all the time.

despite the knee-jerk "well dont be so lazy and just type three letters of the name" resopnse...

I do agree, someitmes you just reflexivly hit those first two letters especially when your hearts pounding and the guys name is Meilintinitisneoaeaux.

Do what i do... set an alias w/ the persons name... me = meyaddayaddacrunkjuice... cuz the really lazy thing to me is wanting them to change the game to suit your own lazynessiousity...

Iconz - Putting the 'sense' in nonsense

Some names were designed with things like this in mind... There are a couple people running around that I wondered, "How did they get past the desc check?"

Names that like Skylar... We all remember him, eh?

Not to derail, but speaking of desc checks...

[ Fire ] Helgorne Lytholmsson the Unproven Bastard

I think that was intentional... RPing a certain something.

Up to the Imms wether or not they want to let him. Though is that a custom title? Looks like they've been in contact with him.

ROFL.

Please do not get me started on that one.

I always thought the people with ME and SELF at the start are their name are lame. It almost seems like their trying to get that cheap pk.

I aim for them.

And hit myself with a hellstream.

Look on the plus side...

At least you don't lose spell proficiency anymore!

Yehhh!!!!

I remenber fighting a Undead Ninja some years ago and getting this strange message that Suicide was not suported in the game...

Took me a Death to ponder on this overpowered undead bonus, and find the problem...

Now really. For me this is a newbie problem. With time you come to not target with only two letter, the same way you learn to type Murder instead of kill. And then create an alias to make Kill = Murder.

And bigger than names starting with "Me" are names of pets.

I can remenber a time when most DK's name started with Tri of triton.

Or the Gharnizon battlemage.

Hell, you can even start with Guardon and hit Guards.

It's just a question of adapting and not acting without thinking.

The only persons i see that might really have a problem with this are people who PK on Telnet. But then again Good luck with Telnet.

Im not sure if the imms share my methodology of reviewing suggestions but heres my take on this ..

The three questions I ask abou any suggestion....

1, Will his change harm anthing? No, it wont.

2, will this change make the game more user friendly? yes, it will.

3, will this change prevent abuse of a function in the game? yes, it will

There is no harm in making this change, except that people who purposefully use such naiming schemes to take advantage of the hectic nature of the game wont have the slight advantage anymore.

My knee-jerk response is the same as most the naysayers in this thread. Dont be lazy, type three letters etc etc...however, on a deeper look I see no problem with the change at all if it where to come to pass.

How about just making it so that the targeting works by aiming at other players before considering mob targets or the self in the room? I'm no coder, but it sounds like it'd be fairly simple to put in an would stop any and all potential abuse of making names that are hard to target.

Pali's idea is even better in my opinion. Whatever is easier coding-wise...

What would be easier is if people just came up with names that didnt abuse the system.

I disagree. A lot of names have similar spelling to a mob for perfectly non-abusive reasons... such as the player just really liked the name and didn't even think about the potential for confusion (Mestaria, for instance). I've created a lot of chars over the years that started with these common letters not because I'm trying to abuse the system, but because the name sounded awesome to me and fit the character. I think my way allows people to remain as creative as they want with the names they pick, while still removing the abuse factor regardless of the name chosen.

I don't think it's fair to assume anyone with a "me" in the front of the name is abusing the system on purpose. I once had a character whose name started with those letters, and it never once crossed my mind how it might cause problems. Probably because I've never had a problem with casting at spell at myself, or any such problem. Is it really that hard to add an extra letter?
