Newbie maps.

Umm, shouldn't these be updated to reflect Aabahran as it is now, rather than the way it was back in 1.0?

I was thinking the same thing the other day.

buy graph paper, do it yourself.

Tried that once. Doesnt always make sense in some areas. And up and down really messes you up.

I know where most of the newer stuff is, but some things on the maps (map of Eastern Aabahran, Western Aabahran, etc) are incorrect. Solace is one location that stands out in my mind, along with the goblin village. I'm sure there are others. Just to clarify, I'm talking about the ASCII maps that every new characters get of the general game world.

Yes, when you take graphing paper and do it yourself... It rarely works. Very annoying. If you want to build, make sure your area "makes sense" people! Unless your stepping through a portal or something when you walk through areas, they should be able to be mapped perfectly on graph paper.

Just my 2 cents.

maps? Pffft, I just remember it all my head? what the hell is a map going to help you with when youre in a PK? Pshhh, maps.

Simply writing something down makes it easier to remember and visualize in your mind. You may not use the map in PK, but the image of it will stay in your mind.

//sarcasm and truth in the mix there

Someone just make a text map, and submit it to the prayer forum. I'm too lazy, and don't care enough about it because I've got it all memorized. But, it sounds like a good job for someone...yeah...

yeah, let's throw the newbs on the lowest rung a bone here. f

Graph paper doesn't work? I don't even use graph paper - I still have a full map of the sewers and guess what - 5 lvls = 5 pieces of paper. Mark UP/DOWN clearly and its easy as.

Cheers,

L-A

PS - the ones new players get might be worth updating, doesn't look good if you're a new player and the map you get aren't even what is there. Could easily piss someone off enough to go to another MUD.

I agree wholeheartedly. I distinctly remember when I first came here how frustrated I was that the maps didn't work. Trying to find the temples and my guild was just horrific.

Hmph. I remember not getting maps and doing it all by hand. It is amazing how gratifiying it is to find hidden stuff because you took the time to properly map stuff out.

So take away the maps. The problem lies in the fact that there are maps that don't work at all. That's what's frustrating. Either ditch them entirely, or make them work. It's kind of hard to explain, but hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about.

Crap...I saw the subject and thought "There's a map of where all the newbies are? Coooooooool..."

It is, but that doesn't mean that there shouldn't be some sort of helping hand in the form of maps, IMO. We're not talking about full-blown detailed maps of Aabahran and each area, we're talking a very, very basic map of Aabahran showing a few areas' general locations.

As much as finding all this out for yourself can be satisfying, for a person who is new to MUDs in general, getting to grips with a text-based interface and a PK system means they're pretty much going to get them slain and looted left, right and centre. Add into that RP if they've never done it before (I was scared to talk to people IC when I first started playing here) and what you have is a very daunting concoction that can result in someone simply not wanting to play, because for some people, getting to grips with MUDding is -hard-.

As I have said before, with threads similar to this, to do with the Newbie Channel and the like, some players have the capacity to be able to pick up all of this fairly quickly and get to grips with things. Others don't, and I don't see why we should be restricting the newbie playerbase to 'potential elites', especially when something as insignificant as a BASIC layout map isn't really going to help them out much in terms of what they're going to face when they start dabbling in PK. As a by-the-by, (not trying to make out as if I'm some sort of huge impacting player, but rather just making a point) if the little things like those maps didn't exist for me as newbie, I wouldn't be playing here because I found it incredibly hard trying to adapt to a text-based navigation system and trying to remember where places are based on room titles and descriptions. It's all well and good saying that if a player wants to learn/improve, they'll figure a way to do it properly themselves/newbies need to learn the hard way/whatever, but that sort of attitude will leave a smaller playerbase of elite/potential elites. Just because Aabahran is a hard, dangerous place, doesn't mean it shouldn't cater to newbies by way of fundementals to help get them started.

In short then, I think updating these maps would be a great idea. If anyone can copy the text from the West Aabahran/East Aabahran maps and post it here in code tags (so that the spacing isn't lost, as the maps are ASCII) or e-mail me it in a notepad file (nick.lowthorpe_AT_baesystems.com - minus the underscores, and replace AT with @ ) I'll slap up an update today whilst I'm at work, pitch it to the Immortals and see what they think, or if it's worth having the maps or not anyway.
