What if you could train saves? Like 1 train would do a permanent -2 to any field or a -1 to save vs spell. Thoughts?
Random Idea
I think this would be a bit overpowered. You can get an obscene amount of trains if you want to, and be completely immune to any set of spells you want.
The problem I see with this idea, is that it further reduces the effectiveness of casters/communers, whilst melees remain at the same level of effectiveness, tipping the balance between melee and caster/communer.

Whoa!
Interesting idea, but no matter what the cost it would simply be too overpowered. Think of it this way, it can nulify some races inborn vulnerabilities. Picture the stone giant berseker with decent saves BEFORE eq. Train using only 1 prac on each skill and you'll have load all the trains into saves. Now you can wear all that hit/dam eq without having to worry much about being dispelled.
Even worse, picture what a gnome could do with it.......Gnome invoker with ungodly saves........no thank you, please drive through.
Well think about it, not sure it would be that overpowered. Lets say a feral ninja for arguments sake after maxing stats will put 15 trains to hp? If he instead puts them towards saves he'd have 150 hp less at pinn which is substancial, and for a total of 15 saves vs spell, or 30 saves vs afflictive. Doesnt seem overpowered by too much. Of course gnomes would have a field day, but they rely a lot on trains for hp, if they went all out mental save they would be very vulnerable to any large warrior. Or other melee who could 2 or 3 round them.
it's a no-go.
You know, I was thinking about this... I've had characters get to 50 with something like 30 trains at most, and they had good rolls and got 4 pracs a rank. They all went into mana and hp, depending on priority. They COULD have gone into saves with this, but really... that'd have been sacrificing something like 300hp. Hp is useful in EVERY situation; saves do nothing against a warrior. Even if this was in place, I don't think it'd be WORTH using. Does anyone here ACTUALLY take the time to train everything on a stone giant from 34%? You already can get a great advantage in hp, mana, or moves from doing so, but does anyone really bother?

If people want to, they could. The option is there for people who want to be all they absolutely can be.

My point exactly. If people WANT to prac everything from 35 or whatever and have a crapload of extra hp, they can do it. But I'm wondering who the hell actually DOES.
....No, really. They should get a medal if they have done it.

Personally, I see anybody who's that willing to invest another ten or so hours into a character just to have a bit of extra hp at 50 as kinda sad. I'd never do it.

Pali's insult makes me sad
I do that...
Gnome invokers. I know its already been posted. They have 20 trains, give or take 2-3, im just using a roundabout guess. Thats with using one practice per skill/spell to get it to 75%. -20 to any save before equipment is wayyyyy overpowered. Especially into mental. I agree though, it would be hugely overpowering, bypassing too many racial negatives.
I think if this were implimented, you would see alot more gnome invokers thats for sure. It really would throw the balance of melee/caster thing off

I did it once...never...again.
It's sad when you have many, many better things to do but instead you waste your time for 50hp. But if you have that kind of free time, then 10 hours doesn't seem like crap if you can knock it out in one day. But, for someone who can't play 10 hours but in a couple days span....that would be a waste.

No it wouldn't. To get those saves that gnome invoker would be sacrificing about 300 hp. Or 600 mana, even more important to an invoker. My last mage at 50 was an illithid necro, and I made it there with something like 35 trains. That ended up being 300hp and 100mana. If I'd dumped that into saves instead of hp, warriors would have slaughtered me FAR too quickly for my tastes. I'll say it again: hp is useful in every situation. Saves are useful in some situations. Even if this was implemented, I'd never use it.
I just really think it has the potential to unbalance gnome invokers against other non-melee. What about melee though. I think alot of melee could do much better against casters in this instance.

Exactly my point. While some gnome might end up with nice saves from his trains, those saves won't help him at all when that warrior comes by and kills you two rounds earlier because you're lacking all that hp you'd have otherwise.

Too true, but I was more thinking along the lines of a gnome invoker being able to completely overload on hp gear because his saves would already be good. Yes you can get saves from eq, but I don't know any invoker who gathers NO saves. Picture this, a gnome invoker who pumps (not all mind you) trains into save vs mal. Now he wears nothing but hps eq. He can still stand up against that warrior because his hps are still up there. But, also now, that shaman that comes by halfway through is gonna have problems because he already has decent mal saves. I know people are thinking one on one situations, but from my experience, no fight is one on one unless there are few people on or everyone is a goodie:D

Or he does things the way they are now, pumps it all into hp, then loads up on saves gear and ends up being in the exact same position. When he's got no gear, he'll still get rolled over by the warrior.
