I played a mud that did just this when I first started and thats why I dont play there, not that its a bad Idea but if Im playing and I get an idea I do not want to have to delete a char just to try something that might fail. Sorry I just dont feel this one.
Limiting amount of characters.
I am totally against the idea, as it goes against everything I could possibly want in this game. I want variety, and unlimited variety (almost) at that. And this is what FL offers, with limitations you couldn't fully experience the game, because you wouldn't be able to roll up a lowbie to see what the class can do, and so on. I don't know, thats just my thing on it, besides the fact that it's not that important to begin with. If you want the rares, go kill someone and take them, thats the bottom line. This game isn't about how shiny your chars eq list looks, its about becoming the character you roll, and making due with what you have.
If you pwipe my character that I've spend over 100 hours IRL time playing, you really expect me to come back and create something new?
How about making rare purges happen more often, that way it will force people to log more often. Instead of a month or whatever it is, make it 20 days or something.
How about we the pbase take a moment and remove and sacrifice all the wares we can on a character that is shelved. If you decide not to play a character that is loaded with a set then sacrifice them. If you were able to get the set once, you'll be able to get it again if you bring them out of retirement. I've got a 50 with tainted, a 50 with tainted and a rare weapon because I can't drop it/uncurse it, and a 29 with an emerald sword and spiked gauntlets.
Why do we need the code/staff to take care of something we could do ourselves?
I dont like having more than one, maybe two pinns at a time, and I have never been DECKED anyway, so this is more directed to the elite players with multiple pinns and a crapload of uber rares who log in the bare minimum to keep their chars well dressed.
Personally I think EQ plays too much of a role in Fl as it is, and i'm not just saying that cuz i dont have any of the good stuff ![]()
Yes, the answer is to make the mud less speed (aka trigger/script) and eq dependent ( I really really wish ). That way thinking and strategy can come in. Then the three of us left can have a fun game!
IP specific accounts would be great except in my family alone there are 4 players. It wouldnt be so bad if there was also a way to get special permission to have more that one account.
Further logging in to an account and seeing a list of lets say 5 characters, would compleetly eliminate the number of times I forget a new characters name.
Also, I dont know how bad of a problem cheating actually is here, but you could link a credit card number to an account. Though the game may remain free, when someone is caught cheating have the mud charge them a fee of 5-15 dollars. Money can go to upkeep of the mud. Also many people (18 and under) may have to use a parents card. If you got caught cheating (not to accuse anyone) and your parents card got charged, how much more would you cheat? I realize this is almost and impossibility but still I think it is a good Idea.
Now, about the purging or rares...I am sure there is a logical reason why this cant happen but instead of going through all the pfiles individually perhaps "beon all" and "beoff all" or something like that. And if by some off chance that actually worked it would be a riot to see
"The most on since startup is 43956." every time you type who.
At least until we go in and manually purge them.
Why don't make the game to do it? Add code that'll be ran once per month, that'll go thru all the pfiles and do nessessary purging? Or something along the line...

You reallllly don't think we go in and bringon each character and purge them?
Limited chars? Bleh, I too played at a mud before that did this, and the reason I left was because of that. I often play quite a few chars at once because I don't like playing the same char day in day out for months...I just can't do that. I don't have one "main" char and some secondaries...I have a lot of main chars...
I am firmly against this.

Warp and I agree.

roflmao!
Also, restricting people to less characters generally improves roleplay, since people actually stick with a character and develope them thoroughly. Need I remind you FL is a RP enforced MUD too?
Thats not true. They otherside could be said aswell, that having more characters diversifies rp because their are now more unique people in the realm, over a period of time, to interact with.
WC
Dammit I hate agreeing with wc...
Sometimes people like exprimenting with different rps, but they find the rp so intense that they can't maintain that rp for a very long time, that is why you see someone like me with half a dozen chars I play equally. I usually only keep one decked, though, because only one of them is the char I like to pk with.
I have a few pinns I actually care about, and others I just jack around with that will become projects in the future.
No one needs more than half a dozen or so characters.
You cannot mannage a bunch of character and keep them all with rares, that is why only the ones i played had rares. It would be a waste of time to rare them.
You can solve that with an acount system.
Alow as many characters as anyone wishes.
And have the mud check for purge all character rares on acount at connect.
If the mud cannot do that, make it create a list of characters to be purged.
And then make it run a special script a few days after the normal purge date, and purge the characters on list.
If someone can keep more than three characters decked in rares, more power to them, they are a very dedicated player. They won at fl, you won at real life.
Checkstops for rares already exist, it would be much easier to bump up the required time to play than it would be to create an account system.
