equiptment and rp

well, it annoys me to see characters that you think would be dressed in humble robes armed to the teeth in godly shinies. once i played another mud where you could trade in your gear with a mob and have it restringed to actually fit your character. i would really like to see this in FL. I know classes are dependant on armor. maybe the armor could keep the same stats after it's restringed. maybe when you die it would turn back into the original name. maybe when someone casts locate object it would still show up with you wearing it, just not when you actually look at the person. Maybe when you identify it would still show the old name of the gear. I don't know anything about coding so I don't know how it would work. I just want clothes that fit my character's RP without +Hit: 1 +Dam:1.

I had a character who had armor to match his roleplay....

....he died a lot =/.

An interesting idea, but really any sort of equipment thats unique to your character can be put in their description. That stuff never changes, unless you re-write it. Granted, no one ever READS a character description...

exactly. What's the first thing you see when you look at someone?

super shiny thing

crazy uber rare

something for mad hitroll

etc.

That's a sick picture red. and I mean sick as in disgusting

But that's one of the reasons for it. If everyone could restring their objects, I'd get uber gear and just restring it to "crap" for everything. Then no one knows what I'm wearing...what a mystery.

I see your reasoning, but it won't work.

Ah, yeah, and i guess i didn't really think about stuff like thieves needing to pry armor with a high ac. stuff like that. meh.

It would be pretty, but far too many pk reasons not to.

then i suggest we add a wide selection of armor that fits rp and has the uber rare stats. Maybe you can go on quests to get it at rank 50.

Hehe. They have uber armor you go get at 50 already silly.

Yeah but, like, armor that looks like what your character would actually wear.

I've been playing with an idea for a super high end game type quest area with set piece drops for every class.... but I'm too lazy to write a three-hundred room area plus mobs and armor =/

-red-: That's just laziness talking.

Seriously. I write descriptions for what my character would wear without any of the armor on at all. The armor and peices are just a game mechanic in my eyes. I look at descriptions as more of a description of the character rather than what they are wearing. Every character I have a meaningful interaction with, I copy and paste their description into notepad to further cement their essence into the mind of whatever character interacted with them. They/I don't concern themselves with what gear they've acquired, but instead the description that lends depth to the character that someone else has created. A good description goes a long way toward excellent RP, in my book.

I digress.

The armor one picks up is part of the overall game mechanic. Once in a while, a specific peice of in-game equipment might lend itself to a greater RP purpose, but usually not. It would be neat to have a system in place where the equipment you were wearing matched the description you have for character, but it isn't quite realistic. This is a game, and part of being successful in the game is learning what the various peices of equipment do, and what benefits they give.

Long story short. The EQ list is mostly for game-mechanic purposes, much like your 'score' sheet. The description is for RP purposes. Given that this is a RP-enforced mud, it stands to reason that the description supercedes any equipment you might be wearing.

An exception might the case for the rare owner-only item, which an Immortal could allow for a restring to fit a description, or a description change to match the item. These have been the exception to the rule in my experience.

You say no one reads descriptions? I read them, I always "bio" characters. Makes the game more interesting if you get a visual of who you're fighting with/talking to/killing...

I agree with Ghrialtin, thats why I suggested a while ago that eq not be a basis for rp at all. I t should simply be there because we need to have eq for stats reasons clearly, we need to have rares and uniques for balance of power, but I hate when people look at me and say "You seem to be doing well" or when people simply pk me for my bracer or my ring.

On the other hand, some peoples rp would be to kill you for material goods, like thieves or any greed worhshiping char.

I guess the way it is is probably for the best.

In another mud I played you could quest for restrings and sometimes other things happened that allowed for them. But they had a rule of no looting restrings, and well, it was a sissy mud anyway. In FL if you have it someone else can try and take it from you (except the very very very rare owner only items) But that is part of what makes this mud such a rush.

Where else do you have a chance to end up naked at the end of the day and not be getting any?

If you decide it isn't your character's RP to wear tons of armor, then don't. Pali walked around with a ball of light, a white robe, and a healer staff. You'd be amazed at how easy it was to survive with just that for a dwarf healer.
