I always thought it'd be a cool idea if some Warmaster were to push the idea of a big tournamen. Where current characters could partake in a organised bracket style tournament. Whoever wanted to sign up, could do so. Ideally entering in only one of their characters due to the complication of potentially being put up against your own character.
I know back in the day the staff had a big battle royal in the arena to the stun. I recall they had imms actively teleporting out players who were stunned.
They even did a 2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2 battle royal type match upon the same day. Awesome times!
hints hints
... You could be that Warmaster.
Just saying.
You need zero immortal support for this. Don't wait on other, just do.
Use the Heralds, or hire a bard to write the notes.
Schedule the fights in the round. If someone doesn't appears, the other wins by default.
Or allow a time frame for the fight to occur like a week, and have them submit the head, PK log or a token you give them as prof of victory. If they have 2 tokens, it's because they killed the other guy.
No safety. If they kill, they kill. But you can disqualify them, make rules.
The most important, is to make it happen. If it's limps on, it limps on. Even if you get a winer by default because no one showed up. Once you have one tournment finished the mystique of it will allow you to make the second one a lot better. You only have 1 chance at being the first champion of the tournment.
Also, Keep it simple.
Mhalador would have Battle Royale's within the Arena, the open arena that no one uses now. Even got spot prizes for winning like custom restrung weapons that were owner only. I do remember the two man teams, I remember trying to hide in the corner until the big guys had taken each other out and jumping in and trying to steal the win. Good times.
This has been done before, even not that long ago.
And though it has been done before, and recently, doesn't mean you can't do it again now.

Wildly unhelpful and counter intuitive
@Ali_gmud do it. Go for gold. Why not - follow the principles that @mya set out and you'll win.

I didn't mean to discourage him.
I thought he was making a suggestion for others to do. I simply wanted to inform him that it has indeed been done before.
If he wants to do it again, then by all means, do so. But since this is in the "suggestions" part of the forum, I don't think it's his original idea to discuss something he wants to do, but rather to suggest something for you guys to code.
And as this is partially relevant, some time ago the open arena was off limits due to bugs or something. I haven't seen any update to this "unwritten" rule, but that doesn't mean I haven't missed it.
Is the open arena still off limits?
It would be nice if the "open" arena were slightly larger.
I picture a great pavilion built around a small pool. A large dirt field encircles the pavilion, itself encompassed by a ring of trees.
Something 5-6 by 5-6, with large marble statues at each corner of the pavilion that must be circumvented. (Meaning you can use them as cover)
Perhaps dig-wrap the corners to be one way around, and add a secret tunnel traversing the north end to the south, and east to west.
This would create a arena where almost every class could compete inside. Even the Hit and Run combatants might find it easier then the current arena.
As for the original Idea. Although it has been done before, seems it should be a regular event, annually/bi-annually.
I think if it were more Imm involved for prizes at least it would bring more appeal to it for other players as well. That would at least ensure more people partake in the action, and others can gamble upon who the winners might be.
As far as not being able to go in, I'm pretty sure it's still off limits. Like the rare items bounty where you could put anything on someone was ridiculous and a fix couldn't really be done so it was removed. The open Arena you could still kill people inside it whether it was intentional or not. I remember the last time I did that as a Healer and killed another good aligned character in there. That was a long time ago too. After that I think a few more people died and nothing ever came of a fix that I know of or have seen in any change log after it was deemed closed. Perhaps now that we've had someone capable of coding things never done before, we may see a fix to the Arena finally?
@TantangelIf you want the staff to "get on board" with your tournament plan. There is a trump card you can play.
Global RP Plot has a cost of 150 RP I believe. Why would you want to spend your RP for a tournament for everyone?
Simple answer: Narcissism. Everyone will get a note inviting them to Tantagels First Annual Tournament of Legends.
Herald will surely record your fame for all time. Turning you into a legend yourself, Tantangel, Proprieter of Wargames.
Make a deal with you, you drop 150 RP to make the games, I will start saving the 5500 RP to get the Arena built.
@Fool_Hardy It wasn't really something that I personally want, just more of an idea as to what might make it a greater appeal. I used to host a few Riddles in the form of notes sent to all with the winner gaining gold as a Herald. Questions would be vague in some cases and others were pretty obvious and it was entertaining. I wouldn't waste 150RP points on that though. I've only gotten over 130 RP points twice, both nailing between 166 and 177. Both qclasses as well though because I am more willing to put forth the RP to get those classes than if I were just rolling something to get me through my exams/homework lately. I have a feeling you're more apt to nail 150RP points far faster than I could ever imagine, but I think that may be because there's not always enough growth seen in a character when they're being written about in specific times of their lives. I try to write journals that both apply to what I am doing now and is a focal point of my origin for the character. The only downside to it is that it seems after X amount of journals and RP logs the rewards seem to stop coming and I start looking at other things in terms of what I can do better as the character. The downside is I get bored regardless of what I'm doing.
I am okay spending RP points to benefit others as long as the character that's benefiting from it has met a few personal marks in their lives. Such as RP, longevity, and impact. The downside to spending it on a global plot is that so much is going on currently that it's hard to want to add anymore to the plate. How many of the Imms are busy 90% of the time? Pretty much all of them in some form or another. @Rygothran has been doing an amazing job and seems to be on most hours of the day. @Lloth surprised the hell out of me a little over a week ago when I was playing an alt character I was training for down the road possibilities, and suddenly I'm in a nearly 3 hour long RP session while I was studying, doing homework, and about 3 hours over my bed time. They're all doing their parts and adding a ton more means they're going to be taken away from other things. How some of them manage to balance the time between their duties and personal life is beyond me at times. So would I ever put forth the 150 RP points for a tournament? Sure. It just isn't in my immediate thought process right now. To spend it on a completely new area for those who find the current Arena already too simple, I could see that being higher on my priorities. Want a fuck ton of gold? Fight the Dragon. Dragon of Unlife. I've never killed that thing and the second I ever came close it would heal back quickly. So seeing something like that would entertain me more than an actual tournament and it could even be done via a MOB that transfers you both to this area so it can't be abused to just get to difficult areas without the risk. It wouldn't give you the items they normally would have, but a cool 10 million gold depending on the difficulty could be well worth the prize to some people.
Well. Now I see a path, that does not exist. TY @Tantangel. I will elaborate on a future thread.
Or....someone could start a poll and see what times are best for everyone, then the staff would be happy to assist.
