get rid of it.
Ignore command
It exists for a reason. It's better that it gets abused by people (who we can talk to) than it is to have your client spammed by somebody that OOC harasses like a trigger-happy spambot, or having to deal with constant threats from people.
If somebody is spamming tells in an OOC fashion, that is already illegal and you can prove it through the replay command. I don't think that situation has EVER happened to me. Ignore isn't used for that reason. It is used because people want to use it for PK reasons (to hide their shape or waking status) or because they don't want to RP.
Using ignore for the PK benefit is in itself as much OOC abuse as the sender. If you want to ignore somebody IN CHARACTER, you just don't reply. Using ignore to stop the tell from being sent is an OOC action. Threats are part of the game, if they are IC.
As I said, abuse of the ignore command is monitored and punished.
Just because somebody CAN do something (spam threats) doesn't mean they should, or should always be allowed to. This game already has a long history of pissing people off. Adding endless taunting and OOC flaming to the mix would not be helpful.
My reasoning was validated in chat by another player. This player stated specifically they where using the ignore command to enforce what they feel is balancing pvp, and had nothing to do with taunting, or OOC flaming. It was used so they could gain a, perceived, pvp advantage. It was not used as a way to prevent harassment, or character roleplay violations. That is my only issue is the command has been used against me several times only stifling roleplay, and meaningful character growth. Some of the best interactions characters will ever have are derived from conflict.
What you call "roleplay", another may call "harassment" and "annoyance".
Ignore is used to protect your environment from those who seek to ruin it. Never heard of ignore being used for the purposes of pk advantages in my own experiences. I've always used it to protect myself from ooc. And I believe no one should be subjected to that type of behavior if they chose not to.
I certainly wouldn't want my son or daughter playing a game where they couldn't filter that stuff out.
So if ignore was removed you'd no longer endorse this game for kids? lol
I think if it affects PK then it is a problem.
Try to look at it from the standpoint that ignore also stops the person who uses it from becoming their own worst enemy and sending OOC rage tells. Better to use that than you break six rules and potentially escalate the situation and/or lose players.
We could argue till blue in the face about what is worse, abusing a command for ooc advantage vs avoiding ooc rage.
Why not have both? Couldn't ignore be tweaked?
I'm perplexed why this is such a big issue.

Some people just like to make noise for nothing ![]()
There's also the suspension of disbelief required for "tells" in general. We all use them to quickly communicate, but as far as communication goes, Brambus hasn't given me my cell phone yet.
Also, ignoring can be part of RP immersion in the context you don't want to use tells. Pony Express is rather quick at delivering individual notes. How you choose to parse what way it's being used can be partially put into context by observation, but to fully appreciate the use, the user has to be allowed to weigh in. The only discourse is to leave open the three options:
-
Forget about it.
-
Report it and forget about it.
-
Use it or don't use it.
Fast and hard rule: The enjoyment of RP cannot be quantified or easily defined. Attaching it to a coded rule or system is an attempt at quantification that will not always accurately reflect the specificity of the action.
TLDR: Don't tell my characters how they should interact with your character.
There shouldn't be an IC command that doubles up for use (read abuse) for pk advantage.
Why is that so hard for some of you to understand?
Things to take away from this so far:
-
Not everyone agrees.
-
There are uses for it in a PK situation, though when it is used solely for PK the immortal team (from what I've seen in my tenure) steps in and puts a stop to it.
-
Not everyone agrees.

There is a fine line between constructive disagreement and being rude to others because they don't see things the same way you do.
Now, constructive disagreement time.
Manual Labor: There are several things in game that can currently be used (read abused) for PK advantages. Diplomatic Immunity for Nobles/Royals, first thing that pops into mind. Very distinct advantage for anyone to have on any class, especially as it does not limit what other choices you can make for affiliations in the game. Faction abilities and items also provide those same types of PK advantages. Titles awarded hide the rank of the title holder, giving an advantage there as well. The differences in this instance are simple - no RP amount is needed to use ignore, and anyone can use it to gain that same leg up, which hardly makes it an advantage. Also, I really, really, REALLY don't want to have to spend all my time while logged in mediating conflicts that arise from flaming and RP abuse that would arise and escalate from the inability to ignore.
