The worst problem in the game as far as I am concerned is neither rare equipment or consumables. I know that is unpopular to say, but for me the worst problem is boredom. Players log hundreds of hours with a character, they get into the cabal they wanted to join, maybe even become leader. They get the shiny equipment they love so much, maybe even a tattoo. But eventually they get bored. They decide to roll up an alternative character that they quickly begin to enjoy. Then they delete the original, often at or near perfect health. To me this is just sad.
As a way of fixing this problem I suggest we implement a q-multiclass solution. Characters who have completed the requirements could choose to apply to join a new guild.
Requirements:
Character must have logged 300+ hrs.
Character must have mastered 80% of skills.
Character must have 200 RP.
Character must not be in a cabal. <if applying, must quit>
Character must not be a Q-class, or Q-race.
Character must choose a guild that complies with their alignment.
Transferable Skills:
An immortal would have to remort the character to level one upon acceptance. The character would retain a small number of skills/spells from his first guild. These skills would be chosen by the immortal working with the character. For instance: The immortal may allow a healer who wishes to become a warrior to retain cure serious, or cure blindness, ect.
I believe players could use this as an alternative to throwing characters away. Perhaps allowing opportunities for players to play classes that are not usually available to their race. Creating an even more in depth character, that the player will be even more infatuated with. For instance, your dwarf warrior through dedication and application gets accepted into the Paladin halls. Your slith thief through dedication and application joins the guild of ninja.
I know you will all shoot this one down, but I had to throw it out there. It needs work, but its just an Idea.
The game does seem to be missing something. I still think about playing and want to play but every time I log in I'm like what now? And I soon log off.
this idea might not help with 'boredom' but it will help prolong the shelf-life of a character. I would say it needs to be more like 500+ hours.
the issue with the q-multiclass idea in our system now... would be balance... as with anything. if the idea was fleshed out more, e.g. multi-class variants were created and balanced, I think it would have some potential. of course, the problem then comes down to the desire of the playerbase to have all classes with selectable skills/paths. replayability is what it all comes down to. (of course, we do have remort classes now that require you be level 50. that can certainly offer another avenue in your characters' life)
(though, if all classes offered paths with selectable skills... this could be an idea used to let a particular player that has invested a good amount of time in a character to retrain in another area of that class - getting more mileage out of a character as it were... maybe even offer new skill selections for the seasoned insert class that decided to enhance/relearn their craft) shrug
Boredom is what leads to the character eco-system of FL. How many players actually accomplish what you mentioned with their characters? Very few. More often than not, if you're bored with a character, it happens well before 500 hours.

To be fair to the original poster. He suggested this for 300 hours.
Personally, I don't mind seeing players delete the characters they are bored of. If that character had an impact on the world and other characters/players then that character is a success. I think what makes the game "boring" is when you have characters that stick around for too long. Those characters are easily ignored and slowly begin to impact the world less and less. That's when even RPing with certain characters is boring because you know they don't feel it or care about it as much as they used to.
When I see new characters rolled up it makes me excited to see what that character will do/accomplish. Its entertaining to see new blood move through the ranks of a cabal. New chars = new RP = new game.
