I disagree. I feel that changing who to what you suggest would undermine the entire purpose of removing them from the who list in the first place: to cultivate an environment where you have to prepare as if somebody is ready to kill you even if you can't see them. If we keep finding ways to make Aabahran a safer place, we might as well all start duck taping pillows around ourselves and wear helmets to MUD with.
"Who" is already a hefty amount of ooc info. The only semi-solid RP information I can think of to explain it is that its the rumor-milling of the commoners of Aabahran on who they saw recently. And if you can't see them, chances are neither can the common folk. Even if you don't accept that angle on the who list, its still a care-bear crutch. A lot of balancing for classes takes into account their ability to hide their presence. If you assume that there is always somebody you can't see just waiting for you to drop your guard, then you will never be surprised by a blackjack. Great rule of thumb that is a far more practical solution to this perceived problem.
I'm all for removing who altogether. No more logging off because you know who is online. No more going straight for cabals because a weaker opposing cabal member logged on. You got to ROUGH IT OUT and find out if anyone is on . As far as anyone would ever know there could be a 100 players online.
As per the original suggestion, it used to be the way you describe. It was changed so that people couldn't abuse who to know if a rogue was online.
Removing the who list sounds good, but the reality is people probably won't play if it changed. Too much work to find friends and foes, too hard to analyze potential dangers, or when to prep to defend a cabal, and near impossible to organize groups.
If anything, this would be a fun option granted to players, who could choose to remove their who list for immersion. If we did that, I think we'd get a good idea of who would actually appreciate the change (virtually no one).
I suggest we remove logging out entirely. Where do our characters go when we log out anyway? Disappear into thin air?
Would bring more reality.
Also, lower HP regen. Like drastically. Let characters regen like 1 HP per hour. Who in real life regenerates 10% of his health in 1 hour time after all?
Also, don't let characters sleep as long as 6 hours haven't passed from the last combat. If you get a fight in real life, you heart is pumping adrenalin into your brain. Try sleeping then. Again more realism.
Also, when you eat something should have at least 4 rounds of lag (approx half a tick/hour). Who eats so fast in real life anyway?
Defecating. AT LEAST 4 rounds of lag. When I go to take a poop, I spend so much time in there that it's usually dry once I am done and start wiping.
Come on guys? REAL LIFE?! Who poops in five minutes anymore, especially with smart phones and tablets available.
[edit] Oh I almost forgot. Return that feature that lets you take a mangle when you sleep mounted. WHO THE FUCK SLEEPS ON A HORSE ANYWAY?
It is the lowest form of wit they say, but I do appreciate some good sarcasm.

**Ah looking to get piles? **

**Ah? Didn't most armies sleep in the saddle when they were on a forced march? I doubt many people were getting mangled by falling out of the saddle. **
