Considering what kind of zombies nowadays necros have, that should be the case.
I have no idea at all why that item casts GROUP sanc while at the same time you are discouraged to bring pets inside the arena.

I kill the wight with no sanc in 1.8 tics. SUCK IT TREBEK

All items of that type affect group members (think of Ghregory's shop in Miruhvor)
Unless you are ridiculously decked(Mindflayer) the wight is near impossible to kill. A mob with all mals, high damaging spells, trip, disarm, and probably a lot more I don't know about should not be that strong. Especially since the level of PK skill in the game REQUIRES the item to even be a threat. Its simply ridiculous.
I've seen plenty of people kill it in shoddy gear (obviously, it is harder for some classes than others)
I don't go to the arena. That solved all my problems. ![]()

There are options:
Learn how to kill it. Read the advice of players here - as counter productive as it may seem. The wight also has vulnerabilities so you should be taking full advantage of that. Accept that you're going to die a few times to work it out - and maybe die a few times here and there chasing the item you want.
Pay someone else to kill it. Merchants, Syndicate, other cabal members, some bum who wants a glass of wine? There isn't always a need to get your hands dirty.
Lytholm.
I remember some time ago, with Dagoneto, Toten's vamp (philantees) was my bane, so I had to find a way to not fight him, without logging out.
So, I sent a nice note to syndi suggesting them to start a new business pattern with warmaster where people would pay them for glimmering staves and I would obtain them. The price would be determined by them.
You can always find a way to obtain glimmering staves without killing the wight yourself.
There are a lot of race/class combos that destroy the wight without even having to try for the most part. If you think the Wight is tough, try to kill the black dragon. Now that's a challenge, heh!
As Lytholm said though, if I have one of the unfortunate race/class combos that can't take out the Wight, I find one of the race/class combos that rip it apart and pay them to do it. Certainly you can find someone. If not, there are other forms of sanc that are pretty good and much much easier to get.
Find a healer or cleric to do it for you, I got it with Ardian for tons of people.
If you think the Wight is tough, try to kill the black dragon. Now that's a challenge, heh! Try a Feral Warrior Shieldmaster. Take a couple of sancs in with you, and this dragon is fishbait. And considering I only sought the shield, and lost it regularly, I had many many bouts with it.
The wight is tough, but anything in the arena is easy if you are a ninja. I learned this the hard way, but now I have it all under control.
Bmgs having a raging easy time on the wight. You can do it naked.
Zerks and Blms from my exp have an easier time too.
You know who has an absolute party in the arena with the dragon? An invoker with no vuln. Taeral would get bored and go dump all OVER the dragon just for the fun of it.
A feral cleric trying the dragon is hilarious. If you find brutal death funny.

I must say, that I can't remember the last time I've used that source of sanctuary. And I must say I do just fine without it. In fact, I find it a waste of time. I'd rather just get some sanc leaves or vials rather than having to remove my weapon, hold , brand , wear when I could just smoke some leaves or flee and quaff a quick vial/eat vial pill.
Also, rotdeath has got to be the most annoying flag in the game.
More annoying than somone you want to kill logging off every time you log on.
