Evangelion
So instead of questions on what to bring, I have a few questions for our college students/graduates. How the **** am I supposed to introduce myself to my roommate? How do I initiate conversations over the phone to see who's going to bring what, etc. Help! The Lemming
Anything works, call up and introduce yourself, or just walk in to the room and be talkative. Also, If your the first one there you get your choice of beds.

The Lemming
so you get the choice of bed. Lucky you. Anyway, if you dont call him, just introduce yourself when you first see him.
Tantangel
Call him up and say that you're his new roommate and ask what all he plans on bringing and whether or not you should bring anything important or not as well. Do you know what all they have accomodated you with there? Make sure you bring a microwave if there isn't any and if there's a community one, bring one anyways because you'll get your food much faster. Toaster is nice to have and make sure to bring some minor pots/pans for your own use, other than that just appliances. Try and split it equally between the two of you so you're not bringing everything and he's mooching off of it.
songofsixpence
Yeah. I'd say call or e-mail him. But if you can't get in touch with him, don't sweat it too much. Bring what you want (nothing terribly large like a couch, just in case). You can always work out what you need once you guys move in completely. And, if you're not too far from home, you can always go back to get more things if you need (or just tough it until your first major break). I would definitely say try to get to know him. I made that mistake with my freshman roomie and ended up having a terrible relationship (it appears that at one point during the year he actively fantasized about killing me). I also ended up spending a very large portion of my time not in my room that year because I was on such terrible grounds with him. just my 2 pence, 6pence

corpsestomp
A lot of colleges don't allow microwaves, toasters, or really any other appliance other than a fridge, I'd check with the college first, then just call up your new roommate. songofsixpence
Yeah. Mine didn't allow extra electric appliances (toaster, microwave, hotplate) because of fire safety codes. A mixture of the heating elements as well as stress on the wiring for older dormitories. They also didn't allow candles or incense in the dorms. This is not to say that you cannot have such items, just hide them well.
