TheNewGuy
Thanks for backing me up Iconz. When its all said and done and your team needs you in the NFL if you can walk your gonna play. This game is the ultimate team sport, and by far one of the most exciting to watch at all times. Then the team has too few players. A player who can barely walk would be better to be without. At least in "soccer", as you wanna call it.

Nekky
I think it's a fairly pointless exercise comparing one sport to another in the manner of "An NFL player couldn't play football, therefore football is better" or "A football player couldn't play NFL, therefore NFL is better". The sports are too different to compare, as 350lb linebackers could not maneuvre well enough to play football, and a 150lb football player could not stand the pounding of a 350lb linebacker. The argument that "America only doesn't do well because we don't care about the sport" isn't a good one, either. There would be almost as many people in the U.S playing football as there would be playing NFL style football. And you don't usually pay David Beckham $214 million to come to play for the LA Galaxy in a sport no one in your country cares about. That being said, I have an American mate who was on exchange here for a year and has come back to visit, and he got me interested in NFL. It's a pretty interesting game to watch once you learn some of the technical rules and figure out what's going on.
Pieman
From the mouth of a former REAL college football player, and playing both soccer and football competitively in my lifetime....soccer isn't a real sport.

Malchaeius
And you don't usually pay David Beckham $214 million to come to play for the LA Galaxy in a sport no one in your country cares about. How I wish that were true. But it really is not. This is a publicity stunt for the LA Galaxy - and they will make some money in this, however, it is doomed to fail once the 'hype' dies down. Why do I say this? Because bringing in a world class athelete into the MLS (aka Minor League Soccer) was tried already with Pele. He failed to revive the sport in the U.S., so what chance does David Beckham have?
KRins
In all honesty, soccer is a lot of fun to play...but not competitively. Baseball owns all when playing for something that matters be it high school, college, whatever. Any amount of thinking you have to do in any other sport is just feeble mind farts compared to the thought that goes into just arriving at the field in baseball. Whenever we travel to play another team in baseball I have a binder that I must know inside and out if I want to be successful that day. There are over 20-30 pages generally, considerably more if they are a conference opponent. I can specifically remember having 11 pages of how often a certain coach would hit and run or steal over his 35+ years coaching at his school. Granted catching requires a lot more thought and information before hand, but I have to know what they think we are going to do, if they know I know what they are thinking, and if they are actually willing to assume they can see inside the fortress that is my mind and use it. But then there are the see and pray hitters as I call them. They see the ball, close their eyes, and pray the swing hits something that isn't air. On the Beckham note: They have not won a single MLS game he has started...one man does not a team make. Hell, they even have arguably one of the best US player in Landon Donovan. Juan Pablo Angel gets my vote for best foreign player to arrive in MLS this year. Luciano Emilio...well I just really don't like D.C United. It is pretty interesting they are in the Superliga final though... What a difference not being in the stairway to the basement can have on a team. TheNewGuy
Angel better than Becks? BS. They just have to put better players around him. Beckham was the best player in Real Madrid the last months of "La Liga", and one of the main reasons they ended on top. Juan Pablo Angel isn't good enough to sit on their bench. Also, if you watch MSL, I understand not liking soccer. Try the Premier League. Or La Liga, though the referees there are crap, and the players tend to use that to their advantage. If it wasn't for that, it would definitly be the best league to watch. Or, you could watch indoor soccer:
Chayesh
Indoor soccer is brutal. That and box lacrosse are like hockey for those who can't skate.
Malchaeius
I love how Landon Donovan was hailed as this United States soccer hero - then gets to the World Cup and is made to look like a chump. If the we want to have the best Soccer league, the United States needs to do what it does with basketball and baseball. Shove money into the pockets of the best athletes in the sport regardless of what country they are from.

I remember memorizing a "half" version as I call it for highschool. I'm not knocking baseball because I love it, however you need to remember much more in football then baseball. EyeSeeU
I will end this with a final plea, what is the biggest sports franchise out for any gaming console right now? MADDEN! American Football = best sport.
TheNewGuy
There are some differances. First, you have no superstars yourself. They shovel money into the players pockets in arabian "oil-billionaire" countries. Result; Players who are on the down finish off their careers there, when they can't play for the best clubs anymore. So they get a big name here, a big name there, but no good players. Second, the interest is too small. In the US, baseball, basketball and AM football is so much bigger, that not that many care for soccer. In Europe though, soccer is bigger than any sport is in the US. The fans are *quite* passionate here. Many more or less live for their team. When the WC, or the European Champs are, Europe more or less stops. Spec the host nation. And American teams can't compete in the Champions League, which is the biggest club tournament in the world, and considered more valuable to win than the WC by some players. No superstars would want to miss that, except beckham , but he has already won it. This one might be the hardest one to beat. Possibly the Uefa would let American teams compete if MSL was one of the best leagues in the world, but I doubt so. And since our teams have the money too, just forget about it. Soccer is the biggest, most viewed sport in the world. That generates A LOT of money. That money goes to Europe, since we have the big stars, the big teams, the best national leagues, and most of all, the Champions League. You'll never have the best soccer league, because the best players will always want to play in the Premier League, La Liga or Serie A. Even your own "stars" (you have no REAL superstars ) plays in Europe, except Landon Donavan, only because he failed miserably when he tried. But your own players are getting better, so I do see a potential for a much better league in the future at least, if still not even near the top 3 of the world. They go out and play soccer instead...
EyeSeeU
I didn't think it was a bad argument. I think your just mad that you got trumped so you had to resort to saying all europeans play computer games and not any consoles which is dead wrong because I know people in France and Germany, whom play Madden. TheNewGuy
Yeah, there ARE people in Europe who plays consoles. But since you're doing statistics, do it right and include how many Europeans vs Americans there are who plays console. And besides, have a look at the tw viewers stats for the soccer WC. If I remember right, I saw somewhere that the WC final had more viewers than the superbowl. In America! Don't remember what year, but it was quite recent. (I bet you'll blame the mexicans ) The stats for the whole world... Damn if there were reliable such. The soccer WC is the only time when the whole world is watching. TheNewGuy
Dude, I recommend you not to open up this thread again. I can go on forever... Yes, you DO have a soccer team, and they start to get pretty decent. I think your're even ranked among the top 20 teams in the world, but that is only because you play qualifies against teams like Canada (no offense, canadians ) and worse. QUITE easy to win then... In reality I think USA should be around 30 somewhere. That is still good; Soccer is the biggest sport in the world. In no other sport are there so many nationalities that do well in it. Sirax
Correct me if im wrong but I could of swore Italy won the world cup last time, Im also certain that they are an European Country aswell . Not that they were the best team in terms of play and style, but they won it all the same. And Brazil play some great football but even the sides that won in 2002 and 1994 were far from convincing. They did have arguably the best team ever in 1970.
TheNewGuy
Too bad Brazil owns all of Europe in soccer. In all ways. Then why did they lose to France? Why were there four European teams of the total four in the semi finals? I'd agree on that Brazil would be able to put together 5-10 teams good enough to compete in the WC, but it's so even on the top than nobody owns anyone. And that's one of the things that are so good about soccer. Anyone can win, since there are more than 1, 3, 5 or 20 teams that are really good. Even team USA is good enough to give Brazil a fair match.
