RP points

Hey pbase,

This was something I saw employed in another MUD a while back, and I thought it may have some use for us. I believe it may also have been discussed in the past.

I hear a lot of bellyaching about RP on the forums. Personally, I've seen nothing but stellar RP since I've been back - sometimes you just need to be the one to initiate it. I've spent literally hours with people in RP, time they could have spent killing other people, gathering stuff, leveling, etc.

But there's always room for improvement, yeah?

Command: rp (name)

These RP points are given out to people who you feel are really making an effort to uphold the story and create a well-rounded character. Players are allotted maybe 5 RP points that they can give other players per week. They are only permitted to give one RP point to a person, so they can't spunk it all at once. It spreads the wealth. The points can be visible to the player (perhaps it shows up in their score) and immortals.

There are two options for use of these points.

The first (preferable in my opinion): Immortals will have a clearer idea of who it is that's out there RPing their asses off. Those with a higher point score can be considered first for cabal advancements, current/future RP plot positions, specialty items, etc. A recent mandate mentioned that elders and leaders are to held to higher standards of RP. This may allow for administrators to see just how much they've been out there doing what they should be doing.

The second option: Make certain options purchasable through RP points. Special perks, specialty items, titles, personalized RP plots by request and things of that nature.

I have seen a level of RP I can be proud of since I came back. It looks like people are really making an effort. Yeah, they should be out there RPing without any incentive other than to have a good time - but let's be honest, that doesn't work for everyone, especially if RP isn't your strong suit.

Anything can be achieved through RP as the game is played now, too. I'll reiterate that I don't think the MUD needs something like this, but it may help spread RP wider, make it more common. It might also help imms focus on those players that put forth exception effort.

Whadda yall think?

i like it. this deserves a guiness. BRILLIANT!

I have seen nothing but home runs from you since you have been back. Another well thought out Idea Red. I know I would be giving my points away to those characters I see that take the time to RP with everything, such as but not limited to talking to or otherwise acknowledging when a mob speaks or interacts with you, i.e. a citizen of rheydin tips his hat to you, forty times a day and you do not reply in kind once or tell him to stop? Bad RP. No points for you!

Currently we give expbonus to those who rp well. Most of the time that I have been around watching you all (yes, I am big brother) no one pays attention to the random emote actions happening. So far the pbase is 2 for 26 on the attempts I have had to get someone to interact.

And for those pinns who don't need the exp, trust me. There is a nice bonus you can still get through rp.

Naked pics of Anume?

I have a feeling you'd go blind.

He didn't say Celerity.

Ullquiora - Is your avatar from "Broken Saints"? If so, kudos to you dude, spread the good word!

As long as people dont hand these points out to their friends because they asked them to over AIM, that would be abuse. I think it is a nifty idea.

Interesting thought, but I must say I'm a bit sceptical. A lot of players know eachother, who plays who etc, and one can't help being more or less biased. It could be good, but we can't let them matter too much, or I think things will go out of hand.

Potential for ooc abuse is HUGE here. Apart from that an interesting idea.

Yes, that's exactly my thoughts too.

maybe players could submit logs to the forum or through notes some how and immortals could award them maybe.

I personally feel that giving experience for RP is nice but flawed as well. Keeping in line with this currency idea, perhaps allow Heralds and Immortals to give them more, and maybe allow players to give 1 out every 24-48 hours.

Despite the possible abuse, wouldn't you say that there is possibility to abuse in pretty much every aspect of the game? Reducing the possibility by limiting the RP points possibly given by players will indeed cut cheating down.

I like that idea because :

(a) It is a shame that at 50, there is no system in place for the players. There very well might be a regulation about tattoos or gifts, but those don't come for short RP sessions (which in turn encourage longer ones for those who struggle with RP like me.)

( The RP merit points can be used to purchase exp, instead of just giving exp. Also, they could be used for other things as well. More versatility?

© Dragon's have gotten stale. Tattoos are RARELY given out. Those cute items up in the sky are rarely seen as well. Some RP sessions are short because that is all we as players can put aside. It would be very hard for the staff to catch most of them.

Anyways, I wanted to throw my two cents in because this one interested me. Forgive me if I am being a bit brash.

I have an idea that might reduce the abuse of RP based reward. Reward the person at a later date, but keep notes perhaps. That way if they get a random reward they know they're doing something right. But they know they won't get to "cash in" RP sessions for xp then just quit once they get it. So if you RP with someone for some potential reward, then go silent pk once it looks like there's less interesting RP to be had it can be taken away before it's given.

I really like the idea of taking rewards and such more into the players hands.

I love the idea...I loved it when I've suggested an RP point system in the past. Just do it already...lots of other MUDs already do, non RP-enforced MUDs that still produce as much, if not more, multi-player RP sessions.

I like this idea. The RP points could be cumulative, say up to 10 before a reward. The receiver has to have gotten their points from at least 5 different people, that way one person couldn't spam it. The likelihood that the OOC connections goes beyond 1 or 2 people are low. So.... that is reduced OOC with more interactions with more players.

Potential for ooc abuse is HUGE here. Apart from that an interesting idea.

Potential is yes, but its not like you can't look at characters and notice a huge spike in RP points.

Example

Mongor and Dramereth are OOC buds.

They RP..

They both have like a ton of points from each other... its like... you pull them aside and spank them.

Or make it so you can only give out like 1 per person so that the points are rare in themselves and would promote people branching out to one another.

Or make it so you can only give out like 1 per person so that the points are rare in themselves and would promote people branching out to one another.

I was just about to say that myself. That way, abuse would be at least less occuring.

I've come to think about a few other issues. Will you know who gave you a point?

If you do, it might bias your actions towards that person in the future:

"heey, this guy gave me a rp point. I'll be nice and not kill him"

"hmph, after all that rp, and no rp point? I'll full-loot incoming!"

Rp points is an ooc thing, and shouldn't affect how you act towards your co-players.

If you don't know who gave it to you, then how do you know what you did well? It's better than knowing tho, imo.
