Anithraril
You are able to only use none rares and learn the skills of an adventurer, so no it isn't against the rules. It is generally a waste of time, but not against the rules.
Mister E
I think it can be very good at times to go the adv route.

krounoi
If you take it all the way, it is an extra 30 ranks. Of course, depending upon what you do before you convert, making those 30 ranks a second time can be a breeze. In the mean time, it is kind of nice for low int races to have at least some skills trained, and you get to start your new class at max stats. Of course, you also have -6 trains, but, oh well. It is a trade off.
Icor
Don't you only get -6 trains if you use those trains as an adventurer?
Warpnow
I would guess it just subtracts 6 from your current trains, so it would be only if you used them all that you had -6.
Acerbity
Which in that case, you can rank up to 10, 15, w/e, to max your stats, and put all your practices into trains, and maxstat your char. Or, if you want to be.. really weird, practice NOTHING, go gnome or something, and put all pracs into trains and end up with four - five extra trains at level 1. Bwahah. Balinor
Theoretically, if you were to practice nothing (or even next-to-nothing, up to 10 key skills/spells), as a gnome, you'd end up with closer to fifteen trains. start with ten, and then 150 by the time you hit thirty, minus 4-5 pracs. Heh. That's an extra 150 hp, at pinn.

Tantangel
They USED to be able to convert practices into trains like 6 months ago or so. It was changed somewhere between then and like January 8th.
