Unfortunately the donkey is right, gear is almost everything in the game.If your hero isn't decked there is simple not a chance to survive agains anyone, sure you can dominate over 2 or 3 people but all the others will be kicking your ***.

Having a plan.
C) Having a backup plan.

A) Being prepared: This involves having proper equipment to save against nasty invokers or shamans or a high AC so those nasty melees with great equipment aren't smacking you for DISMEMBERS through sanc.
A) Slow: This can mean the other person is just a little faster than you or has a connection that lets their trigger to hit faster or you ran the wrong way and they were spamming. 
Erego, if you don't have the great nice shinies, you aren't prepared. And you will simply die a terrible, terrible death. Unless you knew you were going to die before you were attacked, recalled, hid, and logged off.
And who wants to log off all the time?
I would venture to say you just weren't prepared enough if you have to run away like that. Get more prepared, and not in the way of shinies. (Not to say they don't help, but people will prove time and time again that they are not the final statement on the outcome of a fight.)

yeah, I am the same way. I tend to pk to get armor, looting what upgrades they have that I need.
My communers especially are like this. You can almost always tell who I have killed because I am wearing all their armor heh.
Once I get decked out enough though, I dont loot at all..unless its an upgrade over something I have.

If you really want some good stuff just get to know one of my chars, I tend to get super decked in short order, then get bored in short order and give it all away and take a vacation(Twinblades and Nameless have ribbed me on this forever:p )
