Kris: Fair enough - I didn't mean to call you out like that. While I do see some of what you speak of I also think the vast majority of the game and pbase aren't the douches you speak of. I also think some of the 'stronger' players abuse the hell out of bugs and loopholes they find. Then act like fine when (if?) caught. Look at everyone who sheathed the ruby dagger on the blademasters back in the day.
That being said, we've all had character we get strong on and kick the cr@p out of others on - because we can. I'll be the first to admit it - even with great RP lots of time I went and killed someone because I like the thrill of PK (winning is great too, but the whole experience is what I play for) and new that I'd be have a better than average chance of killing them.
More rares....maybe. I think rare eq provides certain powers because its rare. If everyone could have a Ring of Accuracy then it wouldn't be so powerful would it? Making more just moves up the power gaming (IMHO) as everyone has stuff.
More rares makes my life easier - but I don't have issues on most characters as I can find rare or non-rare eq that is as good as I want. On the rare occasions someone else has it - its usually the guy I'm always fighting and its hard to get anyway (I don't know about anyone else, but I always seem to be the guy who lands the tough fights. Maybe because I don't back down from them, maybe I'm just lucky
)
I think rares are tied to pbase size? More players = more rares.
