Best Buy - Geek Squad

Has anyone ever worked for these people before? Or perhaps, know anyone that has?

I'm the primary candidate for a job within their little organization (6th highest position on their career ladder, out of the 8 store positions)

Just trying to get some info before I commit. It's a pretty solid job...and very much welcomed right now with all the crap I am trying to get through in my present state of life.

So...yeah. Anyone, anything?

For those of you interested, and just because I like to think about it ---

About 16 bucks an hour. (ive read countless forums/blogs of ppl making 20 an hour in this position)

Free car.

Free gas.

Free cellphone and plan.

I go to service calls during my scheduled time to work where I fix computers, install/repair/troubleshoot networks, do consulting and 'schooling', etc. etc. I'm also on call 24/7. Anytime I have to respond I'm paid overtime wages from the moment I leave the house.

So, if all goes to plan....you will now refer to me as Geek Squad Double Agent Emmerich. Haha, how dumb is that lol

In a rash move, I left Lowes to become a sub-contractor in the telecommunications field. The people with whom I had the contract with were really F'ing me over. I quit thinking I could just go back to Lowe's and thats when some personal stuff in my life went to hell. Just now starting to get back on my feet....the idea of going back to Lowes was #1 until Best Buy called me up. This job pays more outright than Lowes did, I like the type of work more, and they have just about the same benefits as far as 401k, profit sharing, and stock purchase programs are concerned.

Lowe's management path is still an option...and the word rich is open to interpretation, as far as I'm concerned. What's rich to a 22yr old with a troubled past, may not be the same rich to a girl who comes from the family of a wealthy business owner and likes to play men for material objects.

I've never worked for them, nor do I know anyone who has. Personally, I'm not a big fan of their organization, because I think their services are way overpriced for something a monkey could do. For the "harder" things, a monkey with a free antivirus program.

But if people are willing to pay for those overpriced services, and those services are earning you $16/hr, then by all means milk it for whatever you can. ;) Though, some GS locations have been ousted for copying personal files off their client's computers, so watch yourself. It's hard to defend yourself against the illiterate to the illiterate, and there are lots of people who might be looking to make a buck or two off someone else's scandal.

And of course, you have to have fun doing the work. Thats the most important thing.

Well in their defense, after reading alot about them....

Their prices really aren't too bad.

Yes, on the side I've fixed people's computers and networks. I charged like 10% of what they would get charged by the Geek Squad.

However, I've also worked for a business that did IT support, network administration, the whole nine yards. We charged 200 dollars an hour in alot of cases.

Compared to THAT...Geek Squad's flat rate system wins, almost always.

Sure, there are jobs the X amount of dollars doesn't seem right when it's done in 45 minutes. But when complications come up and so on and so forth...flat rates are the bomb diggity.

So yeah...it has it's upsides and downsides, but to just say it's overpriced...well, I couldn't generally agree with that.
