Soulja Boy Tellem: Crank Dat

The lyrics aren't garbled...

And yah, Travis Barker throwing all that percussion in there makes the song that much better.

Not garbled? Are you joking? Zero lyrical content. You can barely make out what he's saying, and once you bother to pay attention to the words, you want the last 4 minutes of your life back.

You don't have to listen to the lyrics, just do the dance

Only reason I like the song is because it means girls get up and dance. And when girls get up and dance, so do I.

A song doesn't need a 'deeper meaning', it doesn't need to be from the heart, it doesn't need to be intelligent, it doesn't need to be anything. We all listen to music for different reasons, be it to appreciate someone's creative venting or because a song is that popular and cheesy it's just good fun to get up and go crazy dancing. It's possible to enjoy music from a purely melodic, harmonic and rhythmic perspective irrespective of lyrical content and what lyrics mean.

I don't believe in 'superior' genres/styles/artists when it comes to music, and an attitude like that is a personal pet peeve of mine. We all have our own tastes and reasons as to why we listen to music. Some people connect with a good rhythm, some love a catchy melody, some love listening to interesting harmonies, some appreciate the message a song sends through lyrics, or even melody/harmony/rhythm. There’s something out there for us all. Who cares what the lyrics mean if it's a song that gets people dancing and having a good time?

Having said that though, I personally don't like the song. :D

My disposition towards .... that... doesn't stem, really, from why people like it or a down-the-nose look so much as that good, intelligent music with a great beat is absolutely shouldered aside to make way for terrible, unintelligent, unintelligible 'music' (term used loosely) that uses the same theme over and over again to sell itself: sex / money. These 'artists' (also used loosely) are praised ridiculously for doing the same thing the last guy did, only using a handful of different words this time around once again to describe bending a girl over on a dance floor and ****ing her sideways. I'm a little sick of hearing about it, and I wish that some of the mainstream rap artists would write a song that would hit the radio about something other than having sex or rolling around in their money inside their stretch cadillac.

I'm also tired of people trying to defend the particular music that I attack with my opinion by saying that I 'don't have to listen to it', because, unfortunately, I do. You may not have to, but you're not a part time dj, are you? And even if I wasn't, I'd still have to sit through **** like this on the radio to get to a good song that I do like, because this is what they play the most.

Crank Dat.

Good rhythm? check.

Lyrical depth? No check.

Interesting harmonies? No check. (It's been done.)

Good message? No check. (If you say yes, you should be slapped.)

So basically what you have here is another run of the mill song that every fan will tell you is fantastic and they love it, when in reality, it's just a copy of another popular song with (very slightly) different harmonies and different lyrics, the same beat which has been beaten in similar fashion to the dead horse I'm bothering to beat right now, and yet another symbol of where America is headed.

Garbage.

And for the record, my only absolute hatred of rap stems from the lyrical content, not the music. I hate any song with stupid lyrics, it doesn't matter who wrote it.

That's a fair point, - but at the end of the day, if an artist slaps some **** lyrics together with the intention of making money as opposed to their love of the art and throws in some over-used backing, it doesn't matter. It's still going to be ear candy for some, and torture for others. Burn the hell out of the song all you want, but don't slate others for their musical tastes.

And by way, my first post stemmed from me misreading your original post. I just saw the word slut and homed in on it. :o That aside, I do agree with you to some degree. I'm not a fan of that sort of thing at all myself, but each to their own.

And obviously the women who enjoy this song are one of three things:

Ignorant.

Sluts.

Apathetic.

So which one are you calling me again? I think this is the second time you've insulted me on this forum. Ignorance would be the comment above. While we're throwing around insults in the form of opinions, let me add my own two cents. I really can't stand these pseudo-intellects who sign on here with their overly drawn out posts, force feeding their high and mighty opinions to the masses. The whole time thinking they are engaging in an educated debate, when in reality they are just boosting their own ego by dumping on anyone who refuses to see the world as they do.

I don't have a Harvard education, and I don't claim to have a higher understanding of music, politics, or anything really. But at the end of the day, I state my own opinion and leave others to their own without insults. And that makes me the better person.

'music' (term used loosely)

'Definitions for the word music.

1.an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.

2.the tones or sounds employed, occurring in single line (melody) or multiple lines (harmony), and sounded or to be sounded by one or more voices or instruments, or both.

3.musical work or compositions for singing or playing.

4.the written or printed score of a musical composition.

5.such scores collectively.

'My high school music theory class decided the definition of music was the separation of sound and silence. So yes, even talking can be considered music, but who decide on an actual definition of it? Songs are music, rap is music. Music is music whether anyone personally likes it or not. Every individual is allowed their own opinion on what music is and what classifies "good" and "bad" music, but at the end of the day that's all it is, their opinion.

'I don't know where this post was going I havent slept in two days, bloody tech crew and homework. If someone can use this I'm glad, if not. Well, This is kinda my semihemidemi opinion on music.

Hemidemisemiquaver...hehe, who can even play a 1/64th note?

Anyway, how much any likes or dislikes any kind of music, doesn't mean anything. As long as said person does not dis any other kind of music, I couldn't care less.

Personally, I'm not a fan of country music, but I won't call it crap, because it's probably the most popular type of music in America. That said, I know a LOT of 90s country music, because that's all my mom listened to, and still does. And anyone with an ounce of respect for their mother lets her listen to whatever she wants whenever she wants.
