Mud down?

I was thinking - what if we put a reboot button on the home page? that way, if the mud goes down, we don't have to wait for an imm to be available to fix it. I know imms have lives, and FL should NOT be th epriority in them. This way, it takes a little of the pressure off, and allows us to fill in that slack.

What I am thinking is something that, if clicked, pings the MUD. If the ping times out, it sends the command to reboot the MUD. Also, once it has been activated, it is then disabled from being activated again, from any IP, for at least 15 minutes. That way the MUD is not inundated with a flood of reboots once it goes down. If the reboot is a software thing, this might work, and put a little power into the hands of the people, as well as limit abuse.

Of course, if the reboot has to be manually done to the hardware, this wouldn't work at all.

What do you think?

Nomak, we only lose the losers. Kinicky, a neat idea about the reset button, except I think people would be using it to try and see if certain rares repoped when the button was pressed. Think about the idiots who would for no other reason than to ba an arse, keep resetting over and over, simply because it made someone angry. Just conjecture, its nice to see someone with ideas, keep them coming.

Do we lose some of the players permanently when the mud stops for so mch time? What do you think

Honestly? I don't think a few days time is enough to lose players permanently. Even a few weeks. Once we start hitting a month, maybe.

At worst, I could see it preventing new players from coming in, as they may be looking to try a mud and, being unable to try this one, simply move to another they can try.

Honestly, though - this mud is down so rarely in comparison to 90% of the other muds out there that its a non-issue. The problem is that we, as players of such a stable mud, are used to it being up all the time. So, when it goes down, we don;t know how to respond - and we just whine and complain.

As for me, this reminds me how grateful I am that this is a rarity, and not the norm. With that in mind, I give the imm staff two thumbs up.

Rock on, imm staff.

Rock on.

Aye. This is why I was thinking that the button would first have to ping the mud. That way, if the mud was still up, it would return the ping and nothing would happen except disable the button for 15 minutes or so from anyone else.

The disable would also serve to prevent the ungodly spam when the mud does go down. It would take the first person to click it only, and everyone else would have no effect, until the 15 minutes is up and it can be tried again.

I know it is a privelage to play FL. It doesnt cost us players anything either which is also great. However it would still be nice to get an update from one of the imms as to whats going on! :D

Every time the mud goes down people ask this stupid question 100+ times and it has been answered 100+ times.

The immortals will no longer post about the mud being down or even give an estimate on the ETA of rebooting the game.

In the past posting an estimate on this subject only lead to disappointed, angry, vulgar, and obscene posts from people when the time frame the imms posted was unable to be met.

The mud is down... for now. It will be back up eventually... i promise.

Just like a fine woman' date=' she will come back around the minute you stop trying so hard.[/quote']

Well...Zrothum this is the conversation we have before we have the conversation where you say you don't think you want to see women anymore, which is right before the conversation where you think you might want to become a Catholic priest, which is right before the conversation where you come out of the closet.

I'm sure the IMMs would say something if there was anything that needed to be worried about.

Similarly, its not very heartening when your whole playerbase starts speculating that you are just abandoning the MUD after four days of downtime. These guys work hard, regardless of the fact that they each have personal items to deal with. We can at least afford them the respect/good will to be patient, and not start speculating.

oh crap! competing rumors! I must step up my game.

The IMPs have been abducted by the DoD. They are working feverishly on an Arabic translation of FL. The government thinks that the easiest way to stop terrorism is to get them addicted to mudding. Rumor has it that Viri has missed a few days of work, too. Damn the black helicopters!

I heard about that. It's true.
