Assassin's Creed

Well, in the FL downtime I just completed this for the PS3 - love the graphics, and it looked like the storyline was about to go somewhere interesting, but then it just stopped - way to sell a sequel I guess. Gameplay is a bit repetitive, but then games like this always are, could have done with a bit better AI. Once you get counter you can pretty much just stand their and kill any amount of enemies once you have the timing down.

Graphics 9/10

Storyline 7/10

Gameplay 6.5/10

Replayability (hmm haven't gone back and tried for all the extra bonus' and stuff yet) 5/10.

Overall 7.5/10

That is such a great review and explanation of everything that is right, and also everything that is so, so wrong with Assassin's Creed.

I haven't playd AC but from that review the guy sounds like a chump who is too stuck in FPS 'kill, kill, kill' mode to approach the game in any other way. Its a fact of life that even occasional and semi-serious gamers are able to easily come to grips with combat systems and 'Quake' their way through should they really want to.

For example, I found it far easier to complete level like this in Hitman 2: Silent Assassin. I didn't complete the game this way though - it really robs the game of the intention and fun that could be had from actually being a silent (or sometimes not so silent) assassin - even with the price being that it woudl take you ten times longer to finish the game.

If the reviewer didn't want to actually try to be an assassin why didn't he just stick to Halo?

That's probably the problem. Play it (if you have an XBOX 360). You actually have it backwards; his complaint says the exact opposite of what you suggest. Here's an excerpt:

I died during a couple of assassination attempts, but more often than not I was able to get the kill in even though I was spotted. So the game's Big Promise, that you'll become this stealthy silent killer who carefully orchestrates his every move, quickly fades away when you realize that more often than not, the game will force you into a situation where the easiest thing to do is just stab the guy right in the middle of broad daylight with a dozen armed guards standing around not doing anything about it.

[Note: He is complaining about being able to get the kill, signifying that he feels he shouldn't]

Also, I'm personally disappointed. I was totally into this concept and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I loved the time-travel plot gimmick and wanted to know what Altaïr's big secret was. I was ready to kill some people based purely on my own ability to puzzle out the perfect assassination plan. I wanted everything that was promised, and not only did I not get it, I didn't even get an average game.

My personal biggest complaint is with the repetitiveness, and that, quote, 'there is **** all to do.'

Why It Fails: There is **** all to do.

Ubisoft spent an incredible amount of time and energy lovingly crafting this living, breathing world, and then, from all appearances, nearly forgot to actually put a videogame into it. This might explain why everything even remotely gamelike feels so paper-thin and tacked-on. In other open-world games, you can wander around and find all manner of things to catch your attention. But in Assassin's Creed, every part of the city that does not contain a mission is just filler.

In fact, the entire "Kingdom" hub world, a massive expanse of mountains and fields that connects the three cities, has absolutely nothing crucial inside it. As near as I can tell, the only thing you can do in the Kingdom is climb up watchtowers to complete the map of the area, which is useless because you never need to go there for anything. There are flags scattered all over creation, but you only need to collect them to get the you-collected-all-the-flags achievement -- they have nothing to do with the actual story.

What would be great, would be AC graphics with 'Thief' gameplay. For those who have played 'Thief' would probably agree that it handles stealth much better than AC. For starters in 'Thief' it was really hard to hack your way through even one guard, let alone multiple guards.

Thief II was perhaps the best stealth game I've ever played.
