Dex vs Str Races

Ive always loved Str races, Ogres, Minotaurs, Fire Giants etc...

I want to try a dex race either cleric, druid or ranger..

Which do you prefer

Elf/ Drow

Halfling

Feral

any others... and why?

Any constructive help would be appreciated.

drow for cleric because evils are more destructive.

halfling for ranger.

feral make good ninjas.

there are no high dex classes for druid.

Trust me, DEX is not an important stat.

Elves/Drop power comes from High Int and Autosneak.

Halflings power comes from Magic resistant race, with no Vulnerability.

STR is in all aspects superior to DEX.

Except for the fact that the majority of skills in the game have a dex factor for success. And that it matters for hitting. And for parrying. And for dodging. And for every other defense. And for how many items you can carry. And for a crapload of other things. DEX is a huge stat.

And STR and Size and other stuff.

Trust me its:

Size > CON > STR > INT > DEX > WIS

And i will tell you this:

The effect of DEX in defenses is a MYTH, when it is even there.

Most of the thing are not the way most of you think. :P

Chuckles at Mya.

If you want a high dex something I'd suggest a halfling blademaster. They're fun.

I'd prefer a drow over a feral ninja any day (having played both).

Druid you only have the choice between human or beast, I'd take beast alone for rp aspects but they have also other pros.

I can't make a rebuttal since you aren't making an argument. Instead, you are just telling me I am wrong. However, I'm not, so I hope the new players reading this don't take your advice as gospel.

halfling all the way! You get a wide variety of RP and superb magic resistance! Thing that sorta sucks is that you drop your weapon often if you get plagued or poisoned and the weapon requires 18 strength. But if you're a ranger' date=' you can herb away![/quote']

what staff requires 18 strength????? rangers do great with staffs/whips/spears, take advantage of the low strength weapons you can use.

also, dex affects your ac in a huge way which affects how much damage you take, dex plays a huge factor in magic ac as well, this is the hardest ac to get up and only high dex races can take full advantage of the magic ac.

i had -250 ac as a lvl 15 halfling wearing mithril and a few oaken items.

with a lvl 50 decked minotaur i had -190ac. Thats with titanium fullplate, titanium bracers, crown of might, bloodstones pendands, tiamats leggings etc.

dex plays a HUGE factor in how much damage you take, not to mention halflings get the magic resist to boot. The only thing strength matters for is holding heavier weapons. Any melee weilding heavy weapons better have some serious +str modifiers if they want to hang with necros/shamans/etc.

This ac bonus/magic resists allows me to focus more on hit/dam than any other race, because ill be getting hit less than any other race by magic, and taking less damage with the same gear on as any low dex race.

I COMPLETELY beg to differ, yes high str races are overall stronger melee opponents, but 800 mana as an fg cleric and 1100 mana as an elf/drow cleric is a HUGE difference.

Drow/Elf I would go cleric or ninja, both VERY survivable and autosneak is crazy amounts of useful.

Feral/halfer blm both give you GREAT defenses, and can actually "buff" their strength.

Dex also affects your ac, and as a cleric ac is relatively useful (except when you fight vokers;)) Not to mention high dex helps avoid that absolutely ANNOYING bashlock.

If I was going to roll a cleric, my race pick would be Halfling, even including all other race choices. I think it would be fun. Very survivable but a little harder to kill stuff with.

I think I agree with Calron that Stone Giant would make a very good Ranger. Ogre may still be a slightly better choice IMO, but I think Stone Giants have some untapped potential, especially a Stalker one. Agreed again in that Feral could be very strong too, but would be a little harder to play due to size and the vuln - a combo I think that requires a good knowledge of equipment to play it to the fullest. Don't let that put you off though if you think you'll have fun playing it. My vote goes to Feral for the strongest of the dex-race Rangers, if done properly.

Don't fret, I have always picked what I thought was fun and what in my imagination would be cool.

I just wanted to ask what most preferred for Dex. It is interesting to hear opinions and preferences. I guess I could have put this in the poll area.

Plus you pull out some plums like what Mya and Calron are talking about..

just saw minotaur's post. And I didn't actually specifically mention staffs but as a halfling has relatively low str compared to the other classes, some weapons that you might want to use, you just can't. I'll give an example: The smoking flail in the ford. Very nice against invokers, but I'm pretty sure not remembering able to wield it because it was too heavy.

But aside from that....I think some sockets fixed onto your staff causes the weight to increase. One of the most common socketable objects for making your weapon no-remove does do so, if I'm not mistaken.

heh. just eat your vomit. have someone poison a barrel' date=' etc.[/quote']

Or in the case of ninjas, RP your character to be really into autoerotic asphyxiation. Once word gets around about that, rest assured no ninja is going to try and strangle you any time soon.
