I suppose it depends on how far into the future. If you are intending to gain employment with said company and then just up and quit if another offer comes around, there is nothing illegal about that. It just does not necessarily look good. Some other companies down the road may not hire you because you may do it again. However, if you are simply inferring that you are just going to tell them you are thinking about it or whatever for an extended period of time, they will either just hire someone else, or perhaps simply accept it. They may put some sort of stipulation on it of course. As to the legality of it all, this is simply the US that I am speaking about. I am unfamiliar with other countries specific laws regarding such things.

Pretty much the only consequence is that you won't be able to use that company as a reference in the future. Depending on the field you are in that can mean pretty much nothing or you might have just pissed off like 45% of the money in a particular industry. You will learn very very quickly that big companies aren't run by people (regardless of how much the bosses would like to think they are in control), but money. The dollar doesn't know the meaning of the word forgiveness.

Illinois is an at-will state. You can quit anytime, company can fire at anytime.

The practice of accepting multiple job offers, while waiting for the one you really want to come in, is without question, crappy to say the least. Legally, nothing an employer can do to you for saying after accepting that you have decided to "move out of state" or some other excuse to remove yourself from the job.

The issue is, most likely you are applying for like minded jobs, I.T job at IBM, I.T job at Motorola, I.T job at Aon.. etc...

Most of these HR folks get around SHRM (Society of Human Resource Management), if they find out you dupped a few of them they will most likely remember next time you are looking.

So, if anything just try to delay signing the offer letters and give an excuse... should be good for a few days.

Thanks guys, thats what I heard. Some companies but you on a "blacklist" on you might be screwed for future employment at said company. I also heard that the HR folk do talk to other companies about particular applicants so my name could be spread around in a bad way. *Sigh* I just want to be happy...:(
