DnD discussion

Since we were trying to derail the AC thread, I'm going to go ahead and start this one up.

On the topic of wizards...

Wizards in 3.5 dnd are broken, the polymorph line of spells, and a couple of PrCs(namely, Shadowcraft Mage and Incantatrix) make them totally awesomesauce.

Other classes that roxorz my boxorz...

Druids in 3.5 are also super awesome, for the most part because of the Natural Spell feat. And Shapechange.

Clerics are pimped out, also for the same reasons. Shapechange, Time Stop, and Divine Metamagic persistent or quicken make it waaaaay too easy to be a fighter, only 5x better.

So I guess it isn't just FL that has a problem balancing c/c's and melees :D

Half-orc vow of poverty(book of exalted deeds) monk for the saint template (Book of exalted deeds).

Tell me thats not broken.

I like to take a few specific feats out of book of exalted deeds also. Touch of golden ice is a good one.

The official sneak preview of 4th ed for those who haven't seen it.

No more half orcs or gnomes as core races. Dragonborn, tiefling, and some half celestial race are added in their place. Also, elves are split into 3 different races. Races no longer have inherent penalties to stats, only positive modifiers.

No more ability point damage or negative level damage.

No more metamagic feats and magic item creation has been made easier, though magic items themselves are toned down a lot.

All classes abilities are redone into powers, whether they be martial, arcane, or divine in nature. Powers are 'at will', 'per encounter', and 'daily'. Melee classes now have more options when fighting instead of just 'roll a die, see if I hit'. They can perform special attacks depending on which weapon(s) they specialize in. Likewise, mages now have access to an aresenal of spells they can use as much as they want, without draining any spell slots or reserves. Mages are free to be mages.

All classes can heal!

Critical hits are redone.

Those are some of the major changes I've seen. Of course, there are many more listed on the site link above, and I'm sure many more await the final version to be released. Good stuff.

bumped because this deserves more discussion than someones birthday. seriously' date=' FOURTH EDITION. come on.[/quote']

Bah! There is no discussion to be had.

D&D is a roleplaying game. I can understand the mechanics half, the half that are all about the numbers and the battles and the shinies....as my last DM stint, I felt my previous group was a little too concerned with the numbers and they ended up going four hours without rolling any dice.

Point is, as long as those game mechanics exist, Wizards can change it as much as they want and continue to resell it to any idiot that wants more and more prestige classes, more races, and more rule changes.

Well, **** the rules! I've got four sets of them on my living room floor complete with a few 2nd Edition books that are optional rules and the players skills/options book! I'm not buyin' one more book and I'm not learnin' any new rules!

Really any new additions to D&D are a way to make money, and confuse the masses. Personally I like it way back in 2.0, I had to start playing 3.0/.5 because of dm issues. I will play 3.5 til it is 100% gone, then Ill stop. Just like here. If FL dies, I am done mudding.

/agree. I remember when you actually had to fight the enemies.

It's not broken at all, have you seen how pigeon-holed they are into their RP? You know? And you can own a stick, three stones (that can't be precious or semi-precious), and like...a bag. Screw that, I'd much rather play something less kick *** with more freedom.

The Book of Exalted Deeds/Vile Darkness are awesome. Yeah, they're full of mega powerful stuff, but it all (especially the BoED stuff) comes with an extremely high RP price).

There are books that are way more leet since then, too. Complete Champion? Man, clerics/paladins/blackguards are so tough now. The feats in there are absurdly awesome.

'if dnd was meant for you to make uber pwning characters you can just play WoW. I mean really. It's meant much more to teach the players about life, rp, and have fun. How much fun is it when your dm is like 5 ogres ambush you, and the party is like, oh, who's turn is it? they pick one person to take out the ogres and the rest keep walking. It would be like the movie ghost rider. theres all these powerful bad guys, and he goes through them all in very easy succession. What is the point? where is the fun? Ok, I could see the fun in spending time making these amazing characters and then maybe going through some fights with them. But they really arent necessary or appropriate for an actual campaign.

I've come to embrace the crazed power mongering 3.5 offers, so much that I've come full round to make a mockery of it.

the only way I can even stand 3.5 now is by playing the Gestalt system, with no limitations and every sourcebook available.

The gestalt system basically works by taking two classes as a single class. You gain the benefits and abilities of both classes as you progress, without any silly multiclassing penalties. for example, at level 2 I could be a fighter 2/Sorcerer 2, have the BAB and bonus feats of the fighter, the spellcasting of the sorcerer and the saves of both.

Naturally, this opens the game up to the most extreme powergaming imaginable. Yet, it is the only satisfactory way to parody many pop-culture icons (Neo, The Hulk, Jedi, etc.). Difficulty can be compensated for by "gestalting" all enemies, treating monster HD as levels, and giving them an alternate class that complements their abilities, rather than supplements them.

But seriously, can you imagine the terror inflicted by, say, a Fighter/Knight with feats from complete warrior and races of stone?

Christ, I mean, really? This thread again? Isn't it bad enough that we actually play a MUD, and now we're publicly bragging about playing DnD? And not only admitting to playing it, but debating the power struggles of the different editions and campaign settings? Buncha ef'n nerds, if you ask me.....

Anyways, I'm looking for some people to play d6 star wars with. I've got this rocking campaign where everyone is force attuned but don't know it yet! And they're all traveling various parts of the galaxy being sought after by the new Sith Lords for annihilation (All hail, Darth Dominator! lolz, but srsly), but at the same time the new Jedi Order is seeking them out for tutelage. However, no one knows which is which! ('cause, as we all know, every single Jedi and Sith Lord wears black after Episode III. Anyways, you already knew that if you're a true fan.)

So, obviously, we're going to have a brash pilot template (and I swear to god, anyone who power games and throws 2d into something at the start is going to get a size 11 up their back side... srsly, no one is that good without being known.), I was also thinking an Interstellar traveler template and hopefully someone brave enough to play a Curious Explorer one from the 2nd Edition Core book.

Add in a Jawa that has been ostracized from their less than stellar performance on droid selling to Tatooine moisture farmers, and someone to play a mouse droid that thinks he's bigger than he actually is, and we're golden. (Don't worry, the mouse droid will get a few buffs, like a hold out blaster on an arm inside of a hidden compartment. Think of the pure awesomeness that is!)

Oh, and we can also trade our father's old porno mags (standard rules for more recent being worth more than older copies apply. I'm sick of that 70's crap... far too much hair). Plus, if anyone actually knows a girl (like, a IRL one), defiantly bring them. Just be forewarned... I'll probably sex her up. I've got my new dance moves down to that new Ashlee Simpson CD. Oh, and I srsly brought sexy back like, about 20 times now.

If you need to borrow die, I've got a bunch of extra ones I can grab from my candyland and shoots and ladders games. But you gotta bring one that is an alternate colour other than white and black, for the Wild Die purposes.

PM if interested.

PS: I'm looking for one more player to fill in a role in a game that I've been GMing for about two years. It's Star Wars Empire Strikes Back/Splinter of the Minds Eye era, so basic knowledge of that time frame a plus. The premise is that you're yourself and were sucked into the Star Wars Universe after drinking too many redbulls and eating a bag of bad cheeto's during a star wars marathon. Anyways, you'd have to be comfortable playing a gay man named "Laquon Brown", you're a quixotic Jedi and have your own spaceship (YT-2300 Transport named "The Snipesinator", currently impounded, but working on a mission to spring it out.).

PPS: Good luck in the Navy, Laquon!
