Former smokers? Exercise gurus?

Update for those interested. I'm down to 165 pounds now. When I posted I was roughly 175-180.

I backed off on the running for awhile, because I just got into a funk. Now I've pulled out of it. I've been playing baseball once a week in a pick up sandlot league/team. The hardest part is avoiding the coolers of beer. Periodically throughout the week I've been playing catch/batting practice/quick sprints with a friend to stay limber for Tuesday night's game.

Also, I watch the local A and AAA teams play. At least one of them once a week, sometimes twice. I can't say that helps me stay/get in shape. But it's fun to watch ball.

Just got back from a run. One mile (1.05 according to mapmyrun.com that Deykari supplied) in 7 minutes and 30 seconds (rough guess, timed with songs on the mp3 player). Would have done further, but I took a pitch in the ... boys ... playing ball last night. They're not up for a lot of bouncing around yet. (anyone have some catcher's gear they're willing to part with on the cheap?)

How's everyone else's quest in the world of physical fitness?

I quit smoking in November. Haven't had one since. As I'm not officially "misdiagnosed" (for those who knew about my health status and such) and now off the offending medications (that I've oh so very much enjoyed for the past six years), I've decided to exercise and get into shape and such.

Here's my question. How long until I stop coughing like a smoker after I run? I actually didn't cough like this even while smoking... Regardless, I started by walking a few miles daily before attempting a run, and my run was only about a mile today. So I don't think I have over done myself.

Any ideas on the wait I have before me would be greatly appreciated.

I have been smoking for several years, and I have the smokers cough. I have the same problem when working out and consulted a sports physician and he gave me a list of things.

First was swimming, it is less labor intensive than running, while still burning the same amount of calories and not causing you to draw such deep breaths. Also make sure your breathing through your nose, not your mouth. Breathing through your mouth causes you to take deeper breaths and use parts of your lungs that had not gotten exercise because of your smoking.

Another is using an excercise bike on a very difficult, but slow pace. So basically use more resistance than effort. It will still cause a nice sweaty workout without the laboring breaths.

I actually operate a General Nutrution Center and I can help with the coughing part.

Get a nitric oxide to boost your blood flow which SHOULD increase the oxygen levels while you run, prevent a lot of the hacking while your lungs expel the tar when you sleep.

Also do a complete body detox, purges the liver and kidneys *nicotine stays in the body longer than that website says because your liver slowly releases it for up to 2 weeks* and also has a blood cleaner for cholesterol.

Just make sure you take the (akg) version of the nitric oxide and not the stardard blend, the akg is MUCH stronger so you have to take less and it stays with you longer.

I quess I am a wierdo in these cases cause I am a smoker of 7+ years and have excellent cardio capacity and complete 3-miles in anywhere from 16:45 to 17:45, 20-25 pull ups, and about 125 crunches in 2 mins. I max the Marine Corps PFT and I am not a regular runner or exerciser (although I am active in MMA and wrestling).
