Have internet, have free time..........

............ So i decided to get FL another shot.

Basically having read a few posts that have been put up recently I think its time i raised my game a little. Theres been lots of good advice posted on how to do this, which i will be trolling through, but I thought I'd see if I could get any specific advice.

Some of you have already interacted with a few of my characters, so having fought me, and RPed with me a few times might have thought, 'hmm if only he did so and so...' At least I'm hoping so. I think I've moved out of my 'newbie' phase, but never really made it into the 'skilled player' sort of slot, partially due to popping in and out without really having a long period of time dedicated to the game, and partially because i found a 'comfort zone.' Time to change that.

Characters of mine people may have interacted with over the last couple of year have been;

Jomyl - Elf Paladin Knight Praet. My first Pinn. Was given a shot at a time when Nexus was pretty beefy and Knight was basically empty. Learned a lot about dying and re-equiping quickly, but never got beyond very basic equipment and tactics due to dying A LOT and not really having any back up in the Cabal.

I moved flats shortly after Jomyl got trusted, and then didn't have internet connection for 6 months or so - didn't feel like bring the character back at the time, and also realised how much my lack of zone and equip knowledge was hitting me, so rolled a character purely for the purpose of iding some stuff who was.....

Daerlion - Elf Cleric - ending up being Sigil Trusted. This character was never ment to Cabal or really be a serious character as I rolled him after my break, purely to learn a bit. Again got in to KNIGHT when the cabal was really empty, until Wotharg, Wellaby and Brasar came along. Learned a LOT about cabals, got some decent ID logs, got a few kills and learned a fair bit about surviving. Got totally tooled by Atsul(a) Triathix, Drayson etc...He's actually still around and am considering bring him back. In a similar vein to Jomyl he got booted when My PC died, and I couldn't afford a new one for 2 months. Most annoyingly I also lost all the logs and ID lists I had made with him.

Once I got a new PC i was fully intending to bring Daerlion back - despite obviously being naked and Cabal Booted. However I got a bit disillusioned and needed to blow off some steam. At that point I read a thread, not sure who it was by, that mentioned that as soon as they had their 50 established, they rolled another character just to mess around on and build up slowly. This seemed like a good idea to me, and I wanted to try something with some Melee damage output. Hence Burich was born.

Burich - (OUTCAST) Ogre Ranger Praetorian Trusted. Burich was purely supposed to be my blow off steam character before bring Daerlion back. I have one person alone to thank for the route he took. Laahlahni. At level 20 she approached me, no clue what made her think a Level 20 in worse than mithril was the right person for the job, and asked me to become her child's protector. The RP mini plot regarding Casseila was some of the most fun i've had on the MUD to date, and was the first time i've ever really been involved in a proper RP plot. Learned a lot from Laahlahni, Taeltrin, Orodreth and Pamiyn.

From a PK pov i felt Burich was a bit of a failure, as although I got to the point where I was sending a lot of people running, I never really managed to get that killer instinct needed to get the finish. Burich was also my first ever Melee character - and as much as I enjoyed it, the equip dependancy became a real pain when I was getting killed and Full Looted a lot. I had a bit of hissy fit after 3 deaths, 3 full loots in as many days - as due to a new job my free time was becoming increasingly limited, and when your FL time is about 5 hours a week, and you spend 90% getting back to a very basic melee set before getting full looted again its easy to get frustrated.

I took a break at that point - which coincided with Work and my professional life going crazy - 80+ hours every week and work coming home with me, falling asleep at the laptop sort of crazy.

Things have calmed down a lot at work now. And I have decent PC and decent connection. So i figured if i'm ever going to get good at this game, nows the time to do it.

Based on previous characters anybody have any tips? Either post them here (i'm not shy) or by PM.

I also have to make a choice what I'm going to play of course. I have a new lowbie i rolled up to get my feel back ; Human Paladin. I also have an elf invoker sitting at 50 i never really did anything with, and Daerlion and Burich could also both be brought back to life i suppose.

At this point I'm pretty open to suggestions, and I'd really like to give this a proper shot this time.

EDIT

OOPPS Massive post - wasn't ment to be but I just started writing and it all poured out! This is much cheaper than therapy!!

Whilst I always say that the best thing to do is roll what the hell it is that interests you, I -do- have a special place in my heart for Paladins.

I think one of the best ways to improve is to just fight, and get as much fight-time as possible - but be aware of what you are doing, be ready to try something a little different if a particular tactic consistently doesn't work against a particular foe, and DO NOT (I cannot stress this enough), DO NOT be afraid to go after the biggest, meanest foes and don't be afraid of losing EQ. EQ is there to be used, to give you an advantage - why take that advantage away by playing much more conservatively for fear of losing it?

Good to see you back, always enjoyed your characters - especially Burich.

I was recently told some good advice similar to this. The person asked if I cared about my characters, and my response was something along the lines of "Only enough to keep them from dying." Their advice was that I needed to stop caring about dying, and that in turn would gain me many more pks.

Death happens, and when you're new, it happens a LOT. Log your fights and review them. Learn what you did wrong and what you can do better. After some time you'll be the Chuck Norris of FL.

After re-reading my own original post - one thing is quite apparent to me that all the characters in question have been Knights - and that my two new development characters are both in Hope.

Time to break the comfort zone - maybe a Human Dark Knight Despair... Always wanted to try out a bad guy. Haven't played an evil since my first ever character - Loric - a human evil cleric inspired by evilcleric4life as dale was known back then.
