Imoutgoodbye
Hey, if you need truly free Firewalls or an Anti-Virus/Spyware protector, I finally got some good ones. Zone Alarm- I found a free version of this firewall. It allows me to lock off the internet completely and set my security however I want! Can be a little annoying first time around since you have to approve things like your mud client for access to the internet...one time only if you click the right box. or If you're one of those funny people running Vista, you can find a free Comoda firewall. AVG Anti-Virus- I think you can get this with a firewall package for free, too, but I didn't want it. Takes about one hour to run a scan on the full computer. It found things my Stopzilla didn't....I have to call those bastards. Their "superb spyware removal" program got infected by a Trojan....*shakes head*. I can't believe I freaked out after I got hacked and BOUGHT a spyware removal program.
Deykari
Thanks for the Vista firewall heads-up, I'll look into it. I use AVG for the virus side of things, then Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy for spyware/malware/etc. - both free, both really good applications. Anoneemus
Yeah, what Dey said, but I also use SpywareGuard (www.wilderssecurity.com). I like it because it tells you whenever something attempts to change your registry or internet settings, ala Vista, but without all the other annoying popups so I can turn off Vista's default ones and use SpywareGuard instead. It also automatically scans all incoming downloads and .exe files before they're run.
mya
I had Avast, but im changing all of close family PC's to Avira Antivirus. Its a lot better. I find Sygate Personal Firewall very usefull, due to the control of what acesss the Web, and keeps track of file changes. Found Zone Alarm to complex. They changed it now, so its no longer free unless you have the old installer. Spybot S&D is prety cool due to the Registry Notices, for XP. I love blocking changes to that. Anoneemus
Oh, is Spybot the one with registry change alerts? My bad, I thought it was SpywareGuard. I use both regardless.
WarriorCleric
Yeah, SpyBot has Teatimer with it, which tells you when something wants to change your registry. But it's something you need to opt into when you install spybot, it does use a bit of memory (~35mb) but I love it. WC
Ex-D&Der
Last time I tried to install Ad-Aware I had to register for some kind of what looked like crapware site. Is that still the case?
WarriorCleric
I've been installing it for over four years now (as a service tech and for friends) and it's never had a registration required. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ That's the place to get it. On the right side, third option that says Download Ad-Aware Free. WC
