KRins
So far (start of the 2nd round of Cantwell/Stann) all I've seen is Steve Cantwell is drastically improved, Jamie Varner really was a national champion boxer (with some nice knees too), and Marcus Hicks was OV-ER-RAT-ED! Anyone else going to the Florida show in September? I just bought my ticket section 103 row G. EDIT: Quote of the night. Jason Grispi: "I think Yao Ming's tall, I'll still beat his ***" Another EDIT: Were the last 2 matches stopped entirely too quickly or due to strikes doing 0 damage or was that just me? HBwillie
I understand why Grispi's fight might have been stopped. It happened just as Josh said, with Miller getting knocked out, not responding, and coming back to his senses just as Herb Dean stopped the action. As for Condit's fight, I did feel at first that it was a premature stoppage. However, upon further review, I could see that Hiromitsu Miura had absolutely no fight left after that knee strike and his actions post fight indicated that he had no problem with the ref's decision either. That being said, there are four MMA refs I absolutely cannot stand and they are in the following order from most hated to least: Dan Miragliotta, Steve Mazagatti, Herb Dean, and Josh Rosenthal. From best to worst: John McCarthy (now retired), Mario Yamasaki and Yves Lavigne.
KRins
Yeah I wrote my 2nd edit during the commercial before the interview of the Condit/Miura fight. After I watched the tape (yeah I'm a nerd like that) I think it was a good stoppage. Miura wasn't hanging on so much as his arm was draped on Carlos. I'd love to see a rematch there. I thought Miura was going to win at more that one point. Easily the most damage I've ever seen Carlos take. The Grispi stoppage was definately warranted, but it was also one of those judgement calls. Herb Dean tends to err on the side of caution, which has probably saved a lot of concussion, broken noses, and other injuries. I just think he could have allowed another 2 or 3 seconds. I am a little biased because Micah reminds me of a kid on my wrestling team in high school so I root for him. My favorite MMA ref will always be Big John, but I think Mario Yamasaki does a great job as well. Steve Mazagatti has his good fights and his absolutely horrible ones. Josh Rosenthal should just be fired, I have had an issue with just about every single one of his calls. Herb Dean is very protective and generally makes good calls, sometimes I find him overprotective though. I mean these are some of the tough people in the world, aren't they? EDIT: I want to see Brock Larson and Hiromitsu Miura fight. I don't think Larson's straight left right down the middle will work against Miura, who seems strong on his feet. Could you imagine if he tightened up his jiu-jitsu to go along with his judo throws?
Anoneemus
I definitely agree with you about Herb Dean, too many premature stoppages IMO.
HBwillie
A quote from Joe Rogan: "Controversy tends to follow Herb Dean everywhere."
