Russian-Georgian conflict

For those who pay no attention to the news...

Last Thursday, Georgia (the country, not the state) began a military campaign to retake a province called South Ossetia that gained a sort of de facto independence from Georgia in 1992 (it wasn't recognized internationally as separate, so you won't see it as such on maps, but it pretty much governed itself). Russia has a lot of citizens in South Ossetia, and sent troops into it Friday saying they were there to fight off the Georgian forces. Over the weekend the fighting continued amidst UN, US and EU calls for it to be immediately halted (big surprise), and on Monday it was confirmed that Russia had begun an invasion of Georgia itself.

Now, that's the bare bones of it... there's a lot of backstory to this conflict, just like any other, and I encourage anyone interested to look into it. But, my question is... how many other people here are seriously worried about this escalating? Georgia is a US and EU ally, as well as the EU's only hope of oil independence from Russia, and a democracy that is very pro-Western. It is entirely possible that Russia will continue it's invasion and attempt to re-annex Georgia. I have no idea what the consequences of that would be, and it worries me quite a bit.

Not to mention that this is yet another war flaring up killing thousands of people and turning tens of thousands more into refugees.

Medvedev ordered a halt to military actions in Georgia citing that the actions committed had lowered Russia's standing with the world. Now I don't believe the majority of what politicians say, and something about a putting Russian and Politician together just screams dirty, but I can still dream.

But seriously, as long as my supply of peaches are protected, Russia can have the entire god damned state.

I'm not too worried.
