Pieman
Say for instance that you were writing an app. And thought it was amazing, but got a little carried away with it. Now I kinda have 2 questions, is there a limit on how long they can be, and if not and it's like oh say, five pages long is there somewhere else to send it? Warpnow
You can send your applications in parts. "app subject Blah app- Part 1 of 778", however, might be going overboard
Deykari
I don't think there's an actual limit but naturally, good luck with it if it's going to span 8 pages or so. If it's too long to fit in one note/app you can generally split them over two notes/apps. Just keep the subject the same, perhaps include a handy 'part 1 / part 2' kind of thing. I've done similar before. Just a general comment about apps and notes, if they're quite long, and are starting to cover more than one page, give them a double check to make sure everything you're writing is neccassary. I'm not saying to cut chunks out, just don't do what I did - one of my first application was about four hundred pages of nonesense that wouldn't have had any bearing on the application itself anyway. Dey EDIT: Pipped me to the post, Warpnow...
Magick
[Hit Return to continue] If I see that more than once, I scream. I just don't feel like reading a book. If I wanted to, I'd go to my shelves here in my apartment and pick me up a novel instead of logging into FL. Needless to say, because of that, I write my apps with that in mind. Sometimes there's alot of editing, yes, but I like to be forward and to the point. It's quality over quantity. ...There's always an exception to the rule, though. As long as it's quality throughout the quantity. That's my 2¢
WarriorCleric
Take look and see what was said by Anithraril: http://forum.forsakenlands.org/showthread.php?t=921 Write really good applications' date=' I am not talking weakling good, but the kind of good that makes us want to approve you in the first four lines of your application.[/quote'] I mean, not saying they can’t be long, but notice the first four lines comment. A bit facetious, but the idea is still there. The sooner you impress, the better. I’ve stated my opinion on apps before. Some things to keep in mind: A lot of pitfalls people come up with when applying for cabals and (more in particular) quest races/classes is they either use a cliche angle ('my mother and father are dead and I want revenge!' or 'Your pain sustains me!' or 'I want blood!' or '...' or 'we are all brothers under the sun! ::giggle:: tee hee' ) or a bland angle ('my mother and father are alive and well in Val Miran, I have tea with them on sundays.' who gives a crap, right?) When you apply for a quest race/class, be the character, don't be the story. Thats probably my biggest piece of advice I can give with applications. The Imms will find out your story from you if they want it, they do have tells. I can't tell you how many apps I read as an Imm that were 'I grew up in Rheydin, I hunted in emerald forest, I mastered many skills, I plan to be great.' I have had many apps approved, oddly enough most for undead, and I usually didn't say anything about killing people, I didn't say anything about where I lived, I never say anything about what skills I mastered. Another thing to keep in mind is that people have been at this a very long time, so odds are something you come up with isn't new. That doesn't make it a bad idea to go with, but don't think you are breaking new ground with anything you do, youre just adding your own spice to it. And for the love of god, do whatever you can not to mention your parents, it's very cliche. Now, some people favor the long apps, I hate them. I hate writting them, and I hated reading them. I personally feel that if you get to the point quick, and get to it with a certain artistry then that speaks so much more than a two part application. For instance, this is the app I used to apply to watcher with a Dark Knight, it was accepted. Notice I did mention my family, I cringed at doing so, but I felt for the flow of the sentance it was needed, not for the power of the note. Now is this an exceptional application? Nah. But it got a Dark Knight into Watcher. It hinted at a story, it wasn't my story. It's sorta like that cocaine peddlar on the corner, he gives you a little taste, but then you have to pay to get any more. 'What's this? A Drow Dark Knight fighting for grass? I must know more!' or atleast thats what I assume went on in the heads of people reading because I got a lot of roleplay out of that note. Also, an angle I find I use more often than not is the trade of power. I offer something, myself in this case, to get something for myself, the fullfillment of a promise(what promise?). And for the love of god, you need to leave some unanswered questions in an app, otherwise you have no need for imm interaction. If your app details every moment of your life when you apply, your imm interaction will be; tell imm 'Get my note?' Imm tells you 'Yeah... So... how about this weather we're having?' tell imm 'Cool. Yeah, it's textualy wet out today... I suppose you have a cool umbrella?' Imm tells you 'You'd think so, but I'm actually not aloud to make my own items yet. So I've got the same one as you.' tell imm 'Oh, well, I think I should get back to... roleplaying. Have you heard about my fourth grade teacher?' Imm tells you 'Yeah, chapter 2, paragraph 4. Very good inspiration, but not as much as your leper uncle, Sam. Tell me more about him, would you?' tell imm 'Sam... reread the last section in the paragraph 'Inspirations'' Imm tells you 'Oh yeah... need some adoral for this I guess' tell imm 'Ha! Yeah' Anyways, you get my point. Inspire thought, make them want more, not less. That is not to say make them feel like they expected more. Be the crack peddlar! I guess I've gotten carried away, and onto a point not really what was asked about or may not even be too helpful, but hey, I am WC, so it is to be expected. As are gross misuse/over use of commas, so bite off. WC In this thread, Chayesh posted what he looks for un an undead app, even though it’s intended for undead apps, quality 1, 2, and 4 pretty much apply universal. http://forum.forsakenlands.org/showthread.php?t=1410&highlight=application Things I look for in an undead. 1. Something original. As egocentric as Chayesh is, he's tired of "I'll kill for you", "Blood will rain down for you", "Nasty me up, you pagan lover" and stuff like that. It seems like all the undead apps are "I'm stricken with this or that disease and I want to be free". That's cool the first couple of times but the next hundred dull the interest and make my eyes bleed. 2. Format your app. No format, auto-reject. If you can't handle normal practice for notes, how can you handle the responsibility of a questor. Also, spell check people. Look into it. Granted, for some, English is not your first or even second language. I'm not making fun, but I think everyone has some sort of program that can check the spelling. Your attention to your app tells me a lot about you. If it looks like you don't care, why should I care about your app? 3. RP first, PK second with Undeads. That's not to say PK isn't part of the equation. I have had some undeads that were strong RPers, but had no PKs so I told them to spill a little blood first. But I'm also not looking for 25+ kills at rank 30. Along Malch's demon guidelines, show you can kill, but more importantly, show you can stay alive. The ratio is more meaningful than total kills. RP must be top-notch, on the money, your app is your life. 4. Don't be trashy. I'd think this goes without saying but I'll say it anyway. No one likes crappy play, least of all the IMMs because while you might just be ruining some player's day, hearing about it from the 10 players you did it to ruins ours. Don't get uber-decked and run up the kill total because that doesn't impress anyone either. Bottom line: Your RP should be why you are known amongst the players with some general (not necessarily overwhelming) fear for their lives in your presence. Hope that helps. Now in this thread, Goomf gave some good advice, as did Malchaeius, these are geared towards demons, but like undead, a lot of what is said applies to everything. http://forum.forsakenlands.org/showthread.php?t=1161&highlight=application Do something unique' date=' especially in your app. Don't do the staple "Hi my name is Bo....KILL ALL HUMANS! KILL ALL HUMANS!...b" The imms look at pk as an indicator that you know your stuff and you won't be dying alot. Demons are a bunch of souls interwoven into a single psyche...and no one wants a weak psyche. [/quote'] I look for.... Strength of Application - Do something different. Make me enjoy reading your application. Certain things have been done to death. I.E. "I have been possessed already by an evil being controlling me and I need you to free me", "My parents abused me.", etc. Strength of RP - Be able to hold your own in emotes, notes, conversations, etc. Character Buzz - It is always nice when other IMMs and players have nice things to say about your character. I'm not sure if it's too helpful, but thats what I've got. WC
Dale
I remember being told once to shorten my app. But my demon app that gor accepted I had to send in two parts. Also will get rid of that hit return to continue
Magick
That would be more annoying. Having to scroll back to catch the begining. Lets not, but the info on that was good.
