vacuum distillation

A word of caution when using such an apparatus, particularly with chemicals and solutions that may be flammable/explosive, be sure to do such in a well ventilated area. I have some experience in using such a device, and have had some "interesting" situations arise and thankfully I took the necessary precautions to not cause any sort of real injury or even fatality, which quite easily could have happened. I wish I could be less vague, however the law is... well the law.

Also, burka's are the face covering that typically Arabian/middle eastern-central asian women wear as a covering.

err... it exploded. :( I got a couple of gallons of reasonably strong kava tincture, and smaller amounts of tinctures of other things as well. I'm happy with what i've got, i'll buy a real one though. Good thing i wasn't in the room when it happened.

EDIT: to be honest, i'm not even surprised. It looked like a very large, complicated crack pipe.....yeah, now that i look at a real one, i might have well have done it in a pot on the stove. I might've dropped the boiling point maximum like 6 degrees.

EDIT: the tattoo thing isn't illegal (i did it, haven't regretted it yet), and the fight club thing is over. people are stronger in GA than texas, i got my *** whooped and it never really took off either. only made like 300 bucks, so... yeah.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Short_path_distillation_apparatus.svg - OOH!! I'm making this! just gotta find a better way to cool the steam to liquid, and i should be set.

oh, sorry for the double post, but in some seperate but related things,

is Nitrogen a controlled substance?

where can i get lab safety equipment? i need some coats, eye protection, and some fire blankets.

EDIT: and gloves, and some burn treatment stuff.

If anyone knows a cheap place for glassware and the like, i already have a place, but it's rather expensive. I can order online if need be.

also, sodium. It's fun to drop in water. anyone know where to get it?

Nitrogen:

From my experience it can be controlled at low temperatures.

Lab Equipment and substances:

Check out Aldrich chemicals. I found in the past that they have a selection of products for a decent price.

Hope that helps.

Be careful with pressurized stuff. It can implode or explode.

Also some chemical are unstable and can explode, specially if mixed with Air (O2). Ex: Sawdust can explode.

Do experiments with small quantities first then expand them gradually.

Nitrogen, is part of the air. Air is 79% Oxigen, 21% Nitrogen. But i think you want liquid nitrogen for cooling purposes...

I would not use it, i never personally worked with it but you can probably freeze your equipment, or make it brittle and crack (depending on material).

Also important is room exhaustion. You do not want gases building up, where a you could have a explosion, or make you sick from breathing. Expecialy if you working with Acetone or Etanol.

Try to get a safety sheet online of everything you are working with, so that you know what to look out for.

Something like this:

Also watch to long time exposure to chemicals, i have had a teacher who had cancer due to exposure of solvents.

Nitrogen MSDS, I do not think it is restricted substance.

About sodium, you can probably buy it online.

I think we used it here to put on walls in construction to make them white.

If you know someone on the construction field (not wooden houses), or perhaps agricultural field (pests control), they can indicate you which hardware store to buy it pretty cheep.

Can you supply a link to somewhere who has the recipe you are following ?

This appears to be very interesting.
