I like the elitist application procedure, mainly because there is a meaning of getting such a race or class, it becomes an accomplishment. I've never had one myself, but perhaps one day...
Noobie Friendly FL
These I particularly like. Remort classes should be automated' date=' low levels need more movement, and new players need to know how to access the official forums.[/quote']
Inscribed and celerity sitting in a tree...K I S S I N G!!!
The fact is if this mud really ants players it gonna have to lower it standards Id hate to see that happen but its true, heres why.
WoW
xbox 360
Both much easier than this mud in getting imediate gratification.
...Just deleted everything I wrote in an attempt to not be called out by Grishnak for being rude.
First off:

Who gives a crap about the Academy these days? It's interaction baby. Player interaction. Read all of Myrek's posts during the last year for clarification.
Savnt
That's just the way the world turns. Ever fight Orcrist's vamp that spoke in French? Why was he the first ever to get a vamp? Why did Viri get one? Why in the beginning were you only allowed ONE on AR? The answer to that question is the answer as to why there are the elites, the not-so-elite, and everything below.
Celerity and Inscribed
Simplest example. Excellent RPing newbie writes a very well written app and exudes calm confidence in keeping in character and speaking with immortals. Vamp him at lvl 10 and all of sudden he is the target of everyone and doesn't know how to get out of the sun.
Simplest answer comes from Melinda. "It's becomes an accomplishment."
Celerity
Agree with just about everything you said except for the above and changing the parry/maim/dodge etc.
LA
Totally agree, FL newbs have it so easy.
For those who think it's tough, pff. Granted, there could be improvement, there always could be improvement.
For most of what you suggest Celerity it takes solid hours of work and IMO the staff is not stretched too thin as some would think, but content with the rate and progression at the moment. I also think they are very hesitant in reaching out to our playerbase in terms of trusting us with such things.
Only time will tell.
My idea is not just newbie friendly at the low ranks, but more an improvement for the higher ranks.
As it goes, the best of the best become elders and leaders in cabals. What do they get? Great skills/spells/abilities that make them harder to kill. I've never liked the idea of cabals giving skills that make them a dominate power at the higher ranks. If anything, I think that the standard capping should be dropped, and general, low power skills should be applied to all cabals. That way, you don't need to be in a cabal to compete at 50.
And yes, everyone will yell and piss and moan that you don't need to be in a cabal to compete at 50. But I disagree whole heartily. Cabals shouldn't be a springboard for the hard to kill to be even harder. It should be a means of role play in order to improve PK by means other than new, hot, flashy skills of utter doom.
I dunno. I don't want anyone to think I'm anti-pk. I may hate it, but that's just me. I can't imagine a mud without it, and wouldn't want one.

This does make some sense.. And what ive found recently is that you need eq to pk these 'big dogs.' However recently there hasnt been much rare stuff around and I was thinking, how the hell are we supposed to kill these decked people, when you have only minimalistic eq?
Its like... You eed to kill them for the eq, but the only way you are going to be able to kill them is well... With eq to start with...
And yes, there are classes that can just go out and pk basically anything, like a drow cleric, BUT are you now suggesting we should ALL roll drow clerics everytime we want to kill something for eq?
My idea is not just newbie friendly at the low ranks, but more an improvement for the higher ranks.

I disagree.
IMHO, this was the attitude that saw the cabal power nerfs from 1.0 to 2.0. With the diluting of cabal powers several things have happened;
-
Warmaster has gone from THE powerhouse cabal to the joke of the cabal. Sure, there is the occasional strong WM, but they are the cabla most often on the receiving end of the othe cabals (particularly Savant now) due to the restrictions placed and them NOT having a level of ablity to compensate for the restrictions.
-
Eq was toned, but if you look at what has been happening, the playerbase has simply found the powerful equipment that was left and now everyone just gets it. We are now at the stage where unless you eq, you stand very little chance to kill those with it.
I've heard there is an eq drought at the moment - which is bad in the climate where those with eq can kill and those without stand less and less of a chance every day.
Its starting to look like the end of 1.0 all over again - except the cabals with the 'strong' powers aren't WM and Savant, its now Tribunal.
I believe that cabals - espeically the leaders and elders, should be wielding stronger powres than everyone else. These positions shouldn't be given out lightly and there should be a pay off. The leaders and elders of cabals are expected to be first in and last out in cabal wars - and so help me Virigoth if I didn't target leaders and elders first instead of killing inductees. You get more respect if you kill them, other players fear you more and you get more CPs. That being said, fighting a cabal leader should be a harrowing experience - they are the mortal LEADER one of only eight organisations in the land.
Seeing your leader walk onto the battle field and wipe out four of the opposing cabal then raid their stronghold really does instill a sense of pride in the cabal that you are a part of. Seeing players able to do this insprise younger players with something to do.
Seeing someone who did 3 equipment trips beat people who haven't done eq trips does nothing buy instill a sense of the 'haves' and the 'have nots' Then players simply for groups/alliances so they are never under eq'd (OOC and IC) and instead of strong characters to look up to, players say 'Yeah, he gets lots of kills/captures/bounties becuase he jsut gets eq and NEVER fights anyone when he doesn't. He'll just log off and wait until no one is on to run Gear/Factions/Desolation,.'
Its very clear to me which will keep newer players here at FL and which will not.

The Gateway into Aabahran
You have died. You have visited the regions beyond. And you have been
reincarnated yet again to walk among the realms of the living of these
Forsaken Lands. A bright white light surrounds the room in which you now
stand. There are no walls, no floors. You float in nothing, merely a mass
of astral energy awaiting a body to overcome, and give life to. Below you
unfolds a world, and as time passes, it grows larger, giving you a full
observation of what lies below. There is a twinge of regret as your old
past is washed clean, and you are reborn to live again in the realms of
Aabahran...
[Exits: down]
The Lord of Creation is here, restoring your soul and body.

I think this noob got helped pretty well...although he lied a couple of times saying this was his first day then saying hes been here for two weeks..ect BUT haha BUT HE was helped pretty well and the Imms showed good social skills with the nub. Just pointing out a real useage of some of the problems coming in to FL for the very 1st or 2 weeks in...
I have to agree with L-A on this. He may not play as frequently as a lot of people, but he has a good point with the Cabal Leaders and EQ and such. EQ isn't as plentiful as it used to be, as Behrens said in a past thread, Virigoth had set the rare level rather high and he fixed it so that it was more dependant on active characters. With people like Acerbity who make five hundred characters all in the span of a month and pinn them and go out of their way (using AIM or any means necessary) to go to places like Gear, Desolation or any other hard to solo places and get all the armor there, it screws people who make one or two characters to pinn and Cabal out of anything really good because what they may need to survive isn't there because those people horde them and it wont come back for two months because those characters are on so frequently that by the time they get purged of rares, it's at least 2 months before they go back into circulation.
I really support ideas of limiting the amount of characters people are allowed to play for that very reason, and even as the more active characters there are, the more rares are in circulation, you have to take into account bounties as well. I've seen REALLY good EQ being put up on people and then when I go to get it with my pinn, it's never there despite me needing it to up my hit/dam or saves, but I have to wait 2 months or try and find someone who has it and PK them assuming that I do, I still have to find them when they run because I can't lag.
Going for Leaders in opposing Cabals is probably the best idea, the amount of CPs alone is reason enough for some Cabals that don't use armies. Hell, one of the reasons why I like being in a Cabal is the CP system, it's VERY useful and makes a characters self worth more than a nonCabal'd character for me. Doesn't mean I need it to play, but it definitely makes things more interesting even if I'm just an inductee. Hell, if Clans had the same system as Cabals just without nifty skills, I'd be happy with them. But in order to really be a viable power anymore, it seems people need EQ to do so. Then you have people who just horde it and then never fight, then some people refuse to fight until they get all the gear they 'need'.
oops
Yeah, I ****ing hate those logs you posted. I absolutely hate reading who lists unless it's ones from like 3-4 years ago or something older than recently. A simple, "Yeah, I was on with a newbie character I rolled up and Imms and everyone helped them out despite their lying." would have done it for me. Sorry to sound like an ***, but seriously, no more newbie chat logs unless you remove all the rift raff, I don't want to have to scroll down a ton just to read other people's responses that don't have a heap of text. Edit out prompt, who list and anything else that isn't the newbie chat for any future posts please. Chances are a newbie who starts playing FL wont learn it for about 6 months at a minimum unless they OOC it out and learn that way. Then maybe 2 months.

You complain about getting laid I bet.
Can we at least keep the thread newbie friemdly? haha
My favorite part.
I hate reading a who list unless it's from 3-4 years ago.
Priceless.

Right, which is why I said get rid of the app procedure, vamps don't become 'elite' anymore (why are they elite in the first place? because of the RP value...or is because of their balanced PK
?).
Moreover..who cares if he gets creamed? So he dies a lot. Why is it bad when he dies as a vamp as opposed to whatever class/race the newbie would've picked anyways? Going to die either way. Sorry, you can't play a necro, because you'll get creamed. We should make them app class! Ogre? Apply at 30, not newbie-friendly. Come on people!
If you open it up, qraces/classes will be just like any other class/race in the game. Put a little a tag that says not recommended for newbies (due to basic difficulty in handling in the case of one of them) and good to go.
As for a sense accomplishment...writing an app and getting a race at level 30/remorting to level one does that? Get your chars involved in the world. Do anything! Sitting at 30 trying to get vamped or something is not exactly influential in the development of the game and its world...people aren't exactly doing it for development anyways...unless you count pure PK development. Is this game about applying and getting qraces/classes or is it about PK/RP? If your satisfaction comes from sitting at 30 and trying to get qraced to say "I had a vamp!"...you've other things to worry about! Why is this such a major part of the game? Does it need to be? Anything else we could be potentially doing with our time?
Open the races up, balance them out, and let the accomplishment come from doing IC deeds and developing your char, not simply 'prepping' your char for PK at 50. (not through APPs!!!...through interactive RP and relationship building...and not only for some stupid quest race/class (how many people actually continue after getting it anyways? Usually, after you get qraced, the RP turns more passive, reflecting the darker 'sinister' soul---aka free mindless PK with our new perks!))
Let's try to turn the ideology away from "show" rp and mostly blind pk development (what class, what race, what cabal?--who ever asks, what RP is lacking recently? haaah...!!)
The qraces/classes all have powers above and beyond anything that normal race/class combo's have. some of the balance of this is tha there are 30 of each qrace/class allowed at one time..
Also, IMHO, the qraces/classes shouldn't be available just to anyone - not only due to PK prowess but because they are a reward. They are someting special. They are a reason to keep playing - because there is mystery and accomplishment.
You should have to do something more than write an app and roll a character. Currently, all qraces/classes are out of my reach due to time constraints, so its not like I'm making it easier for me to get them. This is the way it should be though. If you want more, you should have to put in some more effort. Some significant more effort.
L-A
You complain about getting laid I bet.
No. I just found all the extra riff raff pointless since a who list is nice if it's old. I like my women like I like my who lists, older because they're more experienced, the fresher ones just mean they're clueless and don't know what to do. Did you honestly need 19 who lists at lvl 1 while helping a newbie? No, you aren't in the PK range of anyone, it's like L-A doing a 'where PK' at lvl 1 even though everyone knows it wont show anything until lvl 10/11 depending on race/class. If I'd posted the log I'd have deleted all prompts, all who lists except for maybe one 'who new' to show the person was indeed below lvl 10/11 saying that he was a newbie. It would be tight as hell allowing people to read it/not read it a lot easier than just slapping a log up and calling it good. Also happens to be the reason why I rarely ever read an RP log because they may have those very things in it that I detest and why even though I save a lot of logs on discs, I'll never go through them again unless I remember doing something but can't remember exactly how I did it (also how I managed to compile a file on how to go through Gear so I could do it later in a group if I ever lead one, which I have several times). It was basically like seeing a thread started by Balinor, opening it up and then finding out that it was a fluff post about how he was coming in on the top10 posters of the forum.
Im whoing for my lvl 50, waiting for someone to get on/off.
nub.
I'm beating Festy to the point. OOC!
Vampires aren't anywhere near as elitist (in power, not application requirements) as they used to be.
Having had a vampire before all the tone downs were made, and a vampire after, I can honestly say that their power level was significantly dropped. And I know of several people, Mudder (Sirican) among them, who agree with me.
As such, I'll put my two cents with Celerity on this one, and move for a less stringent qrace application process. As it is, you so seldom see qraces. Who was the last Psi who lasted more than 50 hours at pinn? The last Crusader? Hell, the last Avatar?
I mean seriously. I understand that people want it to feel like an accomplishment, but those classes weren't painstakingly coded to sit and collect dust. If someone hasn't applied for it, give it to them. Raargant, keep an eye on people, and every couple weeks make some random purity follower an Avatar.
That may sound a little extremist, but it would be a step in the right direction. I really think qraces/qclasses need to be more prominent. They're supposed to be played, not drooled over and then forgotten.
This is a very good thread, and an important one. I think the basic dynamic of the MUD is in a sense newbie unfriendly, in that the better you are the more power you get. This is true of equipment, qraces, and cabals. However, this was always true, and in some sense served as an inducement for people to play more so that they could get those rewards. Some of the change is due to broadband and other games out there--when I started most people were using dialup, and things like WoW didn't exist. But I do think the change to cabals and equipment furthered this trend. I would recommend boosting cabal powers of inductees and making cabal membership a reward for RP, and boost the power of ordinary rares, maybe bring back svs. The biggest effect this would have is it would make it possible to get good equipment without a group or a cabal, so that you wouldn't have to put in as much time (or as much AIM) to be a serious threat. I would also make gold easier to get to help out melees. Also I would reduce the time requirement for cabal membership, so that you don't have to play every day to be in a cabal (although is it now just an hour a week or something?).
