crackwilly21
A friend of mine has an illithid, he was blackjacked, and gagged, and could not cast. Keep in mind he IS a telepathic. I didn't think that it was supposed to affect them, much like silence. Is this a bug?
The Greased Weasel
I would tend to agree with it being a bug.
crackwilly21
Thats what I thought.
Raargant
It's not a bug. Illithids cast spells vocally, same as anyone else.
crackwilly21
Even telepathic illithids? I could have sworn it said in the helpfile that they were unaffected by silence.
Warpnow
Nope. It would be WAY overpowering to be telephatic if silence didn't affect you...
Hegemon
I cannot remember the last time I was silenced, and I play a lot of casters. Edit: Being gagged, on the other hand...
crackwilly21
Then what is the point, besides a few OBVIOUS slight perks. I was almost certain that they could not be silenced/gagged. Is everyone sure, cause this is news to me if it is otherwise.
Warpnow
I am positive. It has come up before... My invoker was silened constantly...
Acerbity
Your invoker wasn't an Illithid. I agree with the whole gag thing on Illithids -- it shouldn't happen.

Raargant
Even telepathic illithids? I could have sworn it said in the helpfile that they were unaffected by silence. ILLITHID ILLITHIDS Illithids are an evil race of subterranean creatures who are endowed with vast mental abilities. They possess the intelligence and wisdom to match almost any other race above or below the surface. They have been known to stun foes with a projected cone of force in combat. In cases of emergencies, Illithids enter a state of shock, in which their body divert their mental resources directly into healing for a limited amount of time. However, they cannot heal either their body or mind for its duration, and therefore this is used only as a last resort to ward off death. Due to their subterranean nature they are vulnerable to light based attacks, while their mental prowess and unnatural metabolism grant them resistance to mental and lighting based spells and attacks. Illithids cannot wield weapons, but they can parry using an innate skill. They have automatic proficiency in several minor spells. Illithids can be: Necromancer Commands for Illithids: CONE, LEECH _________________________ They RESIST mental. They are not immune to silence. They do not speak, they communicate telepathically. However, when they cast spells, they have to actually speak. There's something in the game that does what you are thinking of. Illithids are not it. crackwilly21
Is it that one funky q thing? hehehe, hope that was vague enough.
crackwilly21
Certain races and beings in Aabahran communicate by broadcasting their thoughts directly into another brain. This mode of speech requires mental effort to use, and is unaffected by its receiver's waking state, or spells such as silence. Do you wish to be telepathic? [Y/N]> BOO YAH!!! THERE IT IS. I KNEW I was right. Not to be waving anything around, but I KNEW I'd seen it somewhere for illithids. Thats on Char creation, by the way.
Acerbity
Illithids can broadcast while silenced, and people can hear them while silenced. It says nothing about casting spells -- just communicating.
Warpnow
They can still use telepathy while silenced, IE they can still send telepathic messages. Spell-casting is not through Telephathy. Noe that telepathy is mentioned as a method of SPEECH not a method of spell-casting.
crackwilly21
But still, it should still be unaffected by silence in the casting aspect.
crackwilly21
Alright, after some thought, I can see what the deal is, and I feel bad for looking like a jerk. Thanks for your input, and I now see that I was wrong all along, though it IS a good point...maybe such should be considered.
Raargant
Balance issues as well. Illithids already have the highest HP out of any mage race, as well as shock, then special commands like cone and leech.
Psycho Child
Illithid 1.0 Psi's were loverly. I <3 them.
Chayesh
Illithids make me gag. All slime and tentacles....
khaede
Hah, its ok...back when psis first came out I got silenced and thought that was kind of crap (I was kind of a newb at the time)...but sometimes game mechanics for balance over ride rp. trust me, its necessary. or dont, it doesnt much matter does it! Magick
Balance issues as well. Illithids already have the highest HP out of any mage race' date=' as well as shock, then special commands like cone and leech.[/quote'] It's been a while since I've played a squid, but with their con lower than any other mage race save faerie? Gnome over Illithid before AND after trains minus shock.
Psycho Child
I'd say with the change to gnomes, Gnomes > Illithid for a variety of reasons. But I still <3 Illithis, I just don't have the patience to pinn something, apply and get a qclass, and pinn it again.
Pali
Illithids have the HIGHEST con of the primarily mage races (fae, drow, elf, illithid) except for gnomes, but they still tie gnomes in terms of con. And still get more practices than the others to convert to trains.
