Misson Accomplished! (sorta)

Hi guys,

Since I've 'known' so many of you for so long, I thought I'd let you know: As of today, after a miserable, nerve-wracking 7-8 nasty hours of tests, interviews, and mock project proposals, as well as the most crushing blows to self-esteem I have ever undergone during the course of of the above, I have passed the 'oral assessment' stage of joining the US State Department as a Foreign Service Officer (ie, a US diplomat), and have been extended a conditional offer of employment.

This is the 'big event' I have alluded to in a few threads/posts, and I'm still half-shocked that I passed; frankly, I thought I did a miserable job, and one of the only reasons I even stayed to wait for my score was out of a morbid curiosity over how low that score of mine was. I suppose that shows I don't always have good 'Judgment' (one of the 13 D's of the State Department)...

Anyhow, I'm not actually hired; the actual hiring won't take place until after I pass a security check for a Top Security clearance and medical checks, as well as one final review and a 'line' on a register of candidates...but by far the biggest part is past me, and with luck, in a year or so, I'll be one of this wonderful country's diplomats.

I just wanted to share. Much love all around. :)

Thanks all! Mali, I'm primarily interested in the areas where the 'big' international relations stories are, like Russia or China.

Chayesh, the 'D' stands for 'Dimensions'. They include 'Objectivity and Integrity', 'Analytical Reasoning', 'Writing Ability', 'Composure', 'Judgment', 'Quantitative Analysis', etc. etc. etc.

Congrats Raar, I'm happy for you.

So are US diplomats the people who sit behind the counters at a US consulate? If so then, on the off chance you get assigned to where I stay then I'll be sure to give you a big welcome.:)

Yup, those guys are usually Consular diplomats or junior officers (who are required to do Visa shifts for a year...it's like a form of hazing).
