I personally find clerics and especially healers to be very boring, but yes, very good classes to explore the realms with though. As a newbie I can almost guarantee that you won't be able to kill anyone with those classes, as killing with those classes takes great finesse.

So my suggestion is to play either a ranger or a paladin.

A ranger because of their incredible offensive. As a newbie I remember killing people who attacked me, before I could even get my flees in. Also camouflage is great, because you won't have to fight anyone apart from other rangers when you don't want to.

A paladin, because they are mobile fortresses. Very hard to kill. But has good offense too. A successful flamestrike and a few charges are very lethal.

The best newbie class is a very subjective question, but at least you now have two more classes to consider. I'd advise you not to power rank to 50 too fast. Viri once suggested one should gain five ranks, then pk until you are comfortable with that skill subset and the gain another five ranks and pk again, until you reach 50. Not saying you should follow this though.

Ninjas are nowhere as bad as necromancers as starter class so don't even consider it.;)

Most importantly have fun!!

time for Houseless to need another bath ;)

Paladins are FANTASTIC for learning the game. You get massive defense. Malative cures, lag protection, a free mount, sanctuary. And once you start getting into pking, paladins have the potential for CRAZY offense, as well as stupid amounts of defensive capability. I recently played my first paladin. I took one death to a player at pinn, in about 140-160 hours of gameplay (at pinn, I had 210 hours before I got sadernated). I was new to the class honestly, I knew how they died (laglocks) and did my best to cover that. But if you want something you can be comfortable with, as well as do well with, I say paladins. They combine melee ability, with caster backup

Most (if not all) paladins who I've fought and who have been sadered, I have found to be doing much better as paladins than as crusaders. That might be because the paladin class is a bit too buff or because the sader class is a bit too hard to play, I can't say since I've never played a crusader.

Saders are harder to play than paladins. When you look at the skill sheet you think sweet, Im a buff warrior. You are NOTHING like warrior (from my experiece with the class) you have alot more skills, and should use them only in the appropriate times.

Listen to the real newb!

Play a healer. I know, they can't pk.. but..

Here are some reasons why to play them.

- Gate away from trouble, or to Mobs for re equiping.

- Best Curative spell in the game. You can have 3000 hit points with using your heal spell.

- You fly

- Great armor class

- You attack without attacking

- You have time to work on your RP, you can get caballed, and learn that aspect as well..

- You can learn alot about PK, even though you dont win many.. you will stalemate quite a bit..

- You learn where all the sources of sanctuary exist... etc..

If you want to learn to run, run with a healer, only gate when you cant get away.

Locate objects, gate,, walk back if possible.. you will learn the lands much quicker.

DO NOT GO MELEE!

You finally get a glimmer... you die.. glimmer gone.

You finally get enough leaves.. you die... gone.

Get one nice item.. pked.. gone.

With a healer, harder to lose equipment, much easier to get.

I guess a paladin next, followed by a cleric.

Look Houseless Rogue was crappy for 7 years.. he finally turned the corner!!

WOOT! Hubba hubba!

Failing that, you could try a Paladin.

Personal preference of course. I always recommend playing what you like the sound of and what you feel you will enjoy playing at 50. Playing a class you find boring because it's 'survivable' and 'good for exploring' I don't recommend because you won't play it for long at 50 and one of the main things you need to gain is experience, and you'll get that through playing something you genuinely enjoy for a long period of time - and all classes can identify items with a bit of gold, certain items, or of course, Brambus (the gnome in Tarandue).

Do not advise healers to Newbies.

They are only good to identify items.

They actually make you worse at all other aspects of the game.

You cannot initiate PK.

PK as a healer is completely different of all other classes.

You will get so used to Gating that you will forget how to walk.

You will never learn how to run on foot.

Healers actually detract you from becoming a better Player.

My advice to Newbie is to play a Good Dwarf Cleric.

Or a Duergar (religion chance DISCORD) Evil Cleric.

Paladins are also a good class to learn. But they lack the Identify item spell.

But if you hate the "Hit and Run+Heal" tactic of Clerics then Paladins are for you.

Why are this 3 classes combo good for you ?

Dwarves/Duergars have Huge HP's pools. You can pull 1000-800 HP's respectively. This means you wont sudently die in 2 rounds.

Clerics and Paladins are also Communers and so they can cast the Spells of Sanctuary and Protection from Evil/Good.

Sanctuary means you take half the Damage, and protection cut another good %.

This means you will start to live long enough to learn something and escape when you are lossing.

Also, do not rush to 50. Get to 30-35 and start Challenging people around.

You will learn a lot.

Also as said, DO NOT master every spell/skill. That is a waste of time, for you. You should focus on gaining Knowledge of the game.

Just master Defences, Hand to Hand, the weapon you find yourself using the most. And Word of Recall.

As usual take at least a 45-48 Roll at character creation and Max CON, INT, WIS.

Then divide the rest of the points on STR/DEX.

Clerics get a Giant Strenght spell that buffs your STR a lot.

If you want a good starter char. YOu play a pally. You learn the importance of mastering melee skills (dodge, parry, shield block, and weapons) While also learning the importance of your caster skills. You will be able to run away and heal easily, and you will also be able to summon things to you for stuff you need, as well as the fact paladins are nearly unrivaled in fighting ability (having played an elf paladin I learned warriors are second or third best for taking blows/leading trips) Paladins are probably the single most versatile class. Clerics are nice, but you do not learn any dimension playing a cleric, so your learn to fight as a one gun class. Paladins you can finish with melee, spells, lagging skills. You also learn the saves gear, as well as hit and damage gear since you will want a good mix of both. YOu learn when to dual wield, when to use a shield, and when to use a polearm (Polearm is almost always the proper way to go.)

errr. I like playing healers, and since I have actually played my healer for about a year. I have learned pretty much most of the lands except for Gear/desolation/Blood/Steel. Yea Healers can't pk for ****,(not suppose to actually) but doesn't mean you can't win in a battle. Look at all the Cabaled Healers... the ones that actually know what they are doing. Yes they can get very borring, but I have my fun with them. I have not yet forgotten my way through the lands because of gate, I've actually gotten better in finding my way around. Gate to a mob and then walk my way out. The only time I ever use gate is to get away from a battle or to resurrect someone. Also with Iding eq and weapons, I have made myself a rather nice list of eq. Oh and don't forget the Healer tea parties. :P

As for Paladins, my first character was a paladin. I only wished I went either human or elf instead of half-elf. But I made up for it with my other 20 million paladins. :). In my view Paladins are pretty nice for newbies and lethal in the hands of a vet. Being as they are half melee, half cleric. Great defense, ability to disarm, ability to blind someone, free mount, healing ability, and so on. You will learn to chase and run away easily.

This is just my own views on the matter and I should shut up before I make a bigger fool of myself. So night and cheers. Worked sucked and I have several shots of rum calling my name. :)

Ole' Wot... Sounds like someone is still upset about losing a game of dice!

Healers are wonderful for learning the world around you. Lands and gear. I would also agree with Mya's points though. Healers can PK quite well so long as your opponent doesn't bother to flee.

Huh? game of dice... errr.

Yea, but of course people will flee. Damn them all. :P

actually pk pre-50 got me in alot of trouble, grapple was really good in the 30's so i was winning a ton of fights but made alot of enemies and even managed a bounty that got me killed. Is it better to make the enemies or keep to myself, thats the internal struggle im haveing with my new toon.

The more your practice though the more you will able to deal with people trying to come and get your bounty.

Plus realistically one death from a bounty is nothing. I say you keep it balls to the wall and keep going.

Being faced against some of the hardest pk'ers to play here repeatedly made me a heap better at PK even if I did loose 80% of the time. Eventually you'll find you start winning more then you loose, against anyone you fight, but it takes a lot of losses and a bit of practice.
