Like... that would be cool if there was just some command to set what you are doing if you are just chilling in a room... say like, you're chilling in a library, you could type like:
position is sitting at a nearby table, his nose buried in a book of astronomy.
And then they would walk in and see:
'Character is sitting at a nearby table, his nose buried in a book of astronomy.'
I don't know, its not like some revolutionary idea, but I think it would be cool.
It would have to be set to like... reset everytime you changed rooms though, ya know, you have to manually change it.... but you could possibly set like a default one maybe? Ya know, something simple... hell, I don't know, but the concept is what counts, what say you Aabahran?
Eighthed...nevermind. That is my current state of mind...
It would mean changing your OLC long description, which I think may be a bit too much "power." Obviously it would be subject to immortal supervision and punishment, but even then....I dunno. Also, I personally think it's too much to ask a player to reset it every time they move (not because it's unfair to the player, but because players are both lazy and forgetful) and it's better to keep the status quo than to meet a hunting group in a cave only to read: XXXX is laying by the rock pool, basking in the sun. It's that little mistakes of that sort that rip you out of the RP environment, whereas one can accomplish positioning now through use of the emote system.
Also, without getting too deep into OLC...every time you initiate a fight your long description (what people see when they walk into a room to tell them you're there) changes from the normal to the fighting. Then, when your fight ends, it goes back to the basic. It would require an extra variable (more memory/character, not much but more) to save your custom long description to switch back to. That is an easy enough fix if you just say that it resets to the default after a fight, though.

Like you alluded, easily solved by just having it clear when you move out of the room or change position states (rest, sleep, etc).
This change would also solve the problem of "relaxing" but always having to stand to recast, etc., which is very distracting. You could just continue to stand (and continue to easily cast) and change the long desc to that you are lounging in the bar.
Yup, I think it's a great idea.
Good idea, it sounds like. Might have to add a certain discrimination towards certain strings though like "position is sleeping." or something; could just be me, but that one doesn't seem fair.
It would go under the same category as emote abuse. What I like better is social type things.
Lounge chair : Char is lounging in a comfy chair.
Expanding on Dizz's post:
To have it be less abusable, maybe we can have different states of positions. For instance,
Sit/stand/sleep:
-
Relaxed
-
Tense
-
Friendly
-
Hostile
-
Etc.
syntax: [obj]
So, 'stand relaxed' may be 'Isadora stands with a casual posture.'
'stand relaxed bar' may be 'Isadora leans casually against a bar.'
Or, 'sit relaxed' may be 'Isadora lounges casually.'
'sit relaxed sofa' may be 'Isadora lounges casually on a sofa.'
Whenever you change rooms or positions, you'd automatically return to the default restrings for each position. This system wouldn't have the same freedom that was proposed with the original idea. Yet, it would still add flavor and variety without the potential for abuse or innocent misuse.
Easyer to creat a spell/skill/command that creates an imaginary object that stacks just under you normal line position..
Example:
Position is here basking in the midnight sun.
Mya is here resting.
Mya is here basking in the midnight sun.
I sometimes use triggers to accomplish the same thing, though it doesn't work for sneaking characters though:mad: . I've found it to be pretty nifty so I'd really like to see the idea implemented. As for abuse, it can be abused at the same level as smote can be. As smote abuse has never been a serious problem, as in the pb is good enough to generally not abuse it, I don't see this new idea to be any problem either.
I'm in favor of the Isadora-Dizz idea tree.
Another possibility that could go along the same route...
Walkin/Walkout commands. I know IMMs can change their poofs, and it would be neat if players could change their walkins.
IE -
Bob the fire giant berserker walks in, trampling everything in his path.
Gloria the elf ninja moves swiftly and silently past you.
Six-Gun Sam the dwarven gunslinger the leaps into the room, pistols blazing.

I like the idea, exept for the ninja who silently lets you know they walked by.....
Just because you can't hear them, doesn't mean you can't see them.
