Basic Gear and What-Not

So, this is going to be where I post stuff for basic gear and what not.

What this is NOT: Advice for level 50 players who have tons of rares. Go steam roll some newbs and leave me alone. This has NO RARE EQUIPMENT. If you're naked or new, you shouldn't worry about rare gear, you should worry about protecting yourself from the elements and Pali's Pokes.

What this is: Did you just die and need to re-equip yourself, pronto? Did you just roll, get to 15 and need to wait for a desc check? Did you get to 25 and realize "I need some better gear?" Okay.

Right now, this is aimed at Melee Characters of the Good/Neutral variety. I'll do others later, but right now this is what I've been playing so this is what I remember. That's not to say that the stuff here can't be used for other classes- some of it will be.

I guess I'm defecting from the Vet Info-Horde league, and if I go public I won't be assassinated by the guards. ;)

Goods, Neutrals, Melee

This is a really basic suit for a level 15 Melee character to get and do well with from 15 - 30 if they're not worried about PK. I gave locations of the gear, and what they affect hit/dam-wise. If I've done too much, please let me know and I'll edit out info. Also, these are all from memory right now, so they may not be 100% correct. But, the info is still basically good.

Golden Sun -- Falan Dara -- Hit

Opal/Onyx Rings x2 -- Troll Village -- Hit/Dam

Teeth Necklaces x2 -- mountain trail -- Hit

Mithril Leggings -- Ruins of Old Thalos -- hit

Mithril Gauntlets -- Same -- Hit+Dam

Mithril Boots -- same -- hit

Mithril Helm -- same -- Hit

Mithril Sleeves -- Same -- hit+dam

Black Orb -- Can't recall name of area, swamp south of Miruvhor -- dam

tainted bracelet x2 -- same -- hit

earring (don't recall name) -- same -- hit?

So, you want to upgrade? When you get to 25-30, these will be no problem if you're careful (sanc potions/herbs, armour potion/herbs, flight potion, vuln weapons, etc)

Werewolf Tooth -- Volcano -- dam earring.

Rusted Medallions x2 -- Sunken Ship -- Hit

Titanium Bracers x2 -- The F(j)ord -- hit+dam

Jagged Edge Boots -- Centaur Camp -- hit+dam

Shield of Horns (?) -- Minoma -- Can't recall, just remember it's tasty.

Steel Faceplate -- Val Miran/Rheydin -- Dam, bought in armoury.

Oaken Faceplate -- Elium -- Hit+dam

So, you want weapons?

Rusted Iron Pike -- Exile -- Hit, Dam, nice Avg

Holy Avenger -- Ofcol -- Hit, Dam, decent avg

Hell-Blade/Hell-Spear -- Emerald Forest - Hit, Dam, okay avg for <30

Claymore -- Ofcol -- Dam, avg dam, socket

Fiery Dagger -- Elemental Canyon -- dam

Icicle Dagger -- same -- same

snake head flail -- Minoma -- dam, avg?

Slender lightning spear -- chain to the sky area (can't recall name) -- hit+dam

Throwing Axes -- Mountain Trail -- Hit, Dam, very nice for Minotaurs lower than 20.

So, looking for some other odds and ends?

Blue Gem -- Mountain Trail -- Int, Wis, Ac, Floating nearby.

Bloodstone Amulets -- Val Miran Bathhouses -- Hit, +others

Crusted Ring (?) -- Same as above -- Int

Mind Ring -- Minoma -- Mana

Hell, check the Minoma Shops for some other decent gear. You've got a character with Identify, right? ;)

So, you want some basic sockets?

weapon - Amethyst Shard -- Caves of Cimir -- hit

Weapon - Trinket -- Ofcol -- svs

Weapon - Blue Shard, Red Shard -- Shire -- Svs and SvMental

weapon - four leaf clover -- emerald forest -- luck

Armour - the rulers of the elements in Elemental Canyon each have one. They help stats (str, wis, etc.)

So, you want some basic logistical stuff?

traveling backpack(?) -- Elven Kingdom store. -- Really nice.

a barrel -- Haon Dorr (I think, just west of Val Miran) -- a barrel of water.

vials of sanctuary -- Dark Dwarf Forest, North of Miruvhor, Cannibal Village

Various nice herbs -- Haon Dorr (west of val), Ulrants Manour, Emerald Forest, Elium Forest, Beach near Ogre city (you'll have to learn what they do)

various nice potions -- forsaken lands, cannibal village, near the copper dragon, ruins of Old Thalos

milk -- Ofcol -- buy it from a farmer, cheap and tastey. Covers thirst and hunger with 2 bottles.

basic advice?

All shops in all cities are NOT created equally. A flight potion in Miruvhor is different in price and strength than a flight potion in Rheydin. Shop around, Identify is your friend.

If a potion has an offensive spell on it's affects list, go ahead and test it out... but do it in a room that does not have a shop keeper in it... or any mob that will flatten you.

Some nice things, that are used very situationally, are in shops around the game. Falen Dara has some nice ones, as well as the Gnome City and Illithid Hive.

If you've got scrolls, visit the drow City, just stay out of any districts you're warned to stay out of....

Not all rare equipment is as great as it's cracked up to be, common gear may be better. Also, if you don't want to die as much don't wear the shinnies. Sure, that extra dam roll might be nice now, but when you're naked and re-equipping for the fourth time, avoid that spiked collar to avoid the next death.

Carry some of that extra equipment you've dropped from killing mobs. Sometimes shop keepers have extra cash and will pay some nice coin for garbage gear. Two-handed sword form ruins of old thalos, claymores from ofcol, etc.

Remember that world shifts can be a pain in the ***, but they're your friend. A world shift sometimes means rares have come back into the game... go check some of the local ones out to see if you can pick up a nice shiny you've been waiting on.

Tired of getting ganked by thieves while ranking your paladin? Leave the Tombs and head to Elium. More mobs in Elium, almost no indoor areas, you'll see him coming! Just watch out for any rangers...

Use the lockers at the banks! You don't have to go to the bank to store the gear, either! "Help Locker" will help you on how to use.

Tired of wasting time mastering defenses? Speed up the process! Silver Flute in the Ruins of Old Thalos will do both parry and two handed WHILE helping your master Hand To Hand! It's an exotic weapon, and NOT a bug.

Lots of the equipment in the Shops in Rheydin, Val Miran, and Miruvhor have special abilities tied to them. Browse the weapons when you have Identify and see what they do- note the weight of weapons as that is often important in how other skills affect them. The Same with equipment. Oh, do you have your detect invis up while shopping? You can't let any bargain, no matter how visible or invisible, get by!

So, you've just rolled a character and want to max the stats?

Head north of Val Miran to the Outlaws, while they'll con at "A Lot of Luck", they're easy enough to take down with one defense at level 1, or with a vial of sanctuary. Flee and come back after resting up if you've got to, but each piece of gear helps boots some stats. Hat, gloves, boots, leggings, and some weapons that are a perfect upgrade for a level one (mace, spear). Just watch out for the leader, he hits a little harder.

Head to the Bathhouses for the Bloodstone Amulet, anti good, for some strength.

On the Mountain trail, the Blue Gem will boots Int, and Wis. Be careful if you're an Elf... some orcs don't like you.

There is a diploma you can get and hold on to that will make you a little sturdier and wiser. Con and Wis. Along with a ring of life, which helps constitution. All found in Mud School.

check "Who Newbie" and see if there are any neutrals or evils on, if there are head to the Cannibal Village south of Miruvhor and grab the gear there! (Tribal Necklaces for wis, Arcane Rob for Int, bloody spine for con, Anklet's for Dex.)

Also, I make it a habbit to check the mountain trial leading to the blue gem for gear when I first roll. People will kill the Orcs for the Teeth Necklaces, and leave other things that might be amazing for a level one.

Check the grounds in the Ruins of Old Thalos, lamias have stones that boost stats, and one that lowers svs. experiment with which one does what, or just ID them. Careful, can be a handful for a level 1 to get in and find without getting jumped.

EDIT: Some additional Info.

for sockets, add the thain in the halfling village.

red gem and a blue gem both drop from him.

easy kill for even a level 15.

blue one sucks. its like +1 to hit or something. maybe even worse than that.

red one is decent tho. again, dont remember the stats exactly, but i remember it to be better than the blue.

thain also drobs a decent average club and a good belt for the level 10-15 range.

there is also an elf in the SW corner of the village that has a rainbow staff.

NE of rheydin is an ethereal dark knight that drops some armor lvls 15-20+ for nuetrals and evils. as well as a combat lantern.

east of rheydin, just before you get to the wall or whatever is Kesrick. goods can ask for his double plated gear. decent gear, though i dont remember the stats.

NE of val miran is a buncha fire giant laborers. their leader drops an axe.

south of the crypts, if memory serves, there is a goodie mob you can get rods of holiness from.

centuars have stitched-humanskin cloaks (ive never worn them, as goodies cant touch).

more to come when im not so tired

Thanks for the input, Mad.

Red and blue gems are actually Svs and svmental. But, rules with equipment on the forums are usually no percise locations and no exact stats.

The Combat Lantern is North by North West of Rheydin. Most of Kesrick's gear are rares, that's why I didn't list them, same with the Axe in Elium. Rod of Holinesss is actually in Falan Dara near the Golden Sun and Sun Sceptre. the Humanskin cloaks I haven't touched in awhile, thanks for reminding me of those!

its been so long since i used em, back in the early days of xhan, forgot what they did.

was i too precise? my bad. what do i need to edit?

i was under the impression that the ethereal dk dropped the lantern in the NE of rheydin, going towards that misty swamp and the strange acadamy? (btw if you're new... nevereverever EVER go there. they might seem passive.. but if you go snooping around too much you get the smackdown.

kesricks are rares? i was under the assumption that they werent? dont they have a sorta respawn timer (meaning he refreshes and gets new ones)?

ah. thats right. the rods are there. i usually follow in groups, so i lose track.

np. ive never used them. they any good?

I'm not too sure if you were too exact, but for as long as I can recall it was to never give exact stats, only roundabouts, and areas they're found it.

Kesrick's double plated stuff is rare, but I recently learned that they got a hell of a lot less heavy than I remember. :)

The DK that drops the lantern and ethereal gear is North, way north. I hear North East and I'm thinking Elven Valley or Gasteride's Fortress.

I've been here for years, but never stuck around those areas long enough to learn that. Thanks for the warning.

The Rods are decent as hell for ranking in the tombs and pushing off undead around 30. If you were talking about the cloaks, I haven't a clue- honestly- it's been a long time since I've worn them.

Soldiers Breastplate in citadel (centaur area).

Sharp Glaive in Tarandue, Lightning spears in citadel,Mahogony staff in E'gal, battered iron breastpaltes in Thalos start selling at 8k a piece, so if you locker a few, and grab them after a shift, you can easily get a fast 20k. Also a list of HERBS would be great for newbits.

in rheydin's arena thing, theres a drug dealer. kill him for some black leaves, some opium and a lot of money. he doesnt chase you, so as long as you bring food/water (in case you get hit with hunger) you can easily kill him at level 15. just attack him, flee when you're about to die. sleep. attack him again. the consider command will tell you that he's a lot stronger than you, but don't worry. he hits like a pansy

QUEST INFO

IUTBS: Great idea, I'll crack that up tomorrow, along with other Caster communer stuff. I lost my old ID file, so this is all from memory (which sucks).

Dale: Amulet is already on the list. Had no idea about the belt, thanks for the info! I'll toss that up there when I have a look-see at it.

if anyone would like to put together the ideas of a C/C suit for a level 15-30 easy, NON-RARE requip, please do. Just please- only what it modifies, not how much, and only the area to find it. I don't know much about C/C's, honestly. My hope with this is not to be a walk-through, but more of a quick guide. I left out all the stats/affects of the gear, only hitting the key ones, because this is just basic grab and go stuff- plus I feel people shouldn't be spoon fed everything. However, a little guidance never hurt.

Sorry didn't see about the amulet.

what about the mangles shield? +hit little ac it's in that tower by the centaurs, sure you need a potion of pass door and you gotta get past that annoying raven but I always make it a point to get that since any hit or dam below lvl 15 helps you no matter the class.

That earring you can buy around the kelp farmers is -10 ac

for new people (and i mean brand new) who just want to know where some basic, easy to get gear is..

south of miruvhor, then due east is kashagal. buncha cannibals. you'll get a sword and shield, as well as some leg gear. north then east of val miran are some halfling sherriffs that drop leather vests and daggers.

level up a bit and then east then north of rheydin are some orcs you can kill for fur chestpieces, teeth necklaces and cloaks. and west then south of val miran are some trolls where you can get rings.

I almost died because of this advice. And I am not level 15 but level 23. He hits like a pansy indeed, but he also bashes like a crazy mofo. And is like level 50. Good luck with killing him at rank 15.
