Check this out. A large community of people who wholly believe in a flat earth, with their own "scientific" reasons.

The theory behind how the government conspiracy to cover up that Earth is feasible.

I am reading through this, in awe...

Interesting...

I saw no mention of religion on their explanation.

Yes, it's a silly theory but it has merit.

If people did not question general truths we would still think earth was flat.

"If there is a new theory which is better at explaining and predicting phenomena than an older theory (i.e. it has more explanatory power), we are justified in believing that the newer theory describes reality more correctly."

And it's always fun defending the undefendable. :P

A theory has merit until it has been proven wrong by evidence. This one may at one time have had merit (say, 3000 years ago), but even the ancient Greeks were scientific enough to figure out that the world is round.

I strongly dislike even using the word theory here, because using it in a common-use context while describing something that someone wants to consider scientific is misleading. This is not a scientific theory. It makes a ton of assumptions without evidence or need and it is not abandoned/modified when testing shows it does not apply. It's based in faith, not skeptical analysis.

Pali is right' date=' it is not a theory. Gravity is a theory. This is not science.[/quote']

This is a theory.

I have a theory on who did WTC. My theory is not a scientific theory.

This is may or not be a scientific theory. (Probably it is not.)

But it's still a theory.

Edit: Just to remember that a theory does not needs to be right to be a theory. If it was, we would call it a fact.

Yes, this belief that the world is flat is clearly not a scientific theory. If you believe in math and physics than you must reject this idea that the world is flat.

The world is a sphere, deal with it.

If you insist on entertaining the idea of flatland, there is a book on the subject http://www.amazon.com/Flatland-Romance-Dimensions-Oxford-Classics/dp/019953750X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242083579&sr=8-1

Flatland... imagines a two-dimensional world inhabited by sentient geometric shapes who think their planar world is all there is. But one Flatlander, a Square, discovers the existence of a third dimension and the limits of his world's assumptions about reality and comes to understand the confusing problem of higher dimensions.

It's a world of slaughter, a world or tears,

Its a world of lies, its a world of fear,

There's so much that we loot-

Sword, cape, gloves and boots,

It's a evil, evil world...

It's a small, violent world after all!

It's a small, violent world after all!

It's a small, violent world after all!

its a evil, evil world.

There three moons and one golden sun

And a grin means death to everyone.

Though the mountains divide

And the oceans don't connect.

It's a small, violent world...

It's a small, violent world after all!

It's a small, violent world after all!

It's a small, violent world after all!

its a evil, evil world.

No, we wouldn't. Theories are entirely different beasts than facts and laws. There's no point where they are upgraded to fact or law status... in fact, when it comes to how they enhance our understanding of the universe, a theory is far superior to either a fact or law because it tells us why the facts and laws are what they are.

Gravity is one of the theories that were being tested at CERN (until they broke one of the massive digital cameras) this past summer. Physicists have to prove that the Higg's particle exists to prove the existence of the "Higg's field". Modern day physicists think the Higg's field is responsible for gravity. Certain objects get caught in the field and gain mass, while others can freely shoot through it.
