Haymaker/Uppercut fix

As it stands, classes without the shield block ability can block uppercut when wearing a shield. I'm pretty sure it's the same way with haymaker. I propose that if you can't properly use a shield, you can't stop those blows with one. Thoughts?

I agree. Someone who isn't skilled in using a shield shouldn't be able to skillfully deflect a fast and powerful blow like a haymaker or uppercut.

On the other hand....if you are mastered at shield block you should be able to effectively block haymaker and uppercut. Even though there are chances you miss the block and get your face bloodied.

That's what happens anyway. Haymaker, unless the Zerk follows Path of Anger, can't go through anyone wearing a shield (I may be wrong on this, perhaps it does have a chance to go through with the other two paths, but a very minor chance at that). One of the perks of Path of Anger is the skull-crusher rage path skill, which if you read the help file, gives you the chance of haymakering through someone's defences without cleaving the shield.

So the argument is, for any Zerks who don't follow path of rage, why should they have to shield cleave a foes shield before throwing a haymaker if the person in question isn't even skilled with them at all? One class that springs to mind that often uses a shield without the shield block skill is battlemage.

Again, I might be wrong about how haymaker-shieldblocking works for any other path than anger.

I agree as well. Not much else to say, really.

Yeah, this is more on the lines of a bug. If you can't use shields, you shouldn't gain any of the defenses of one (besides wearing a chunk of material like any other armor (ac/svs/hit/dam/etc)).

I honestly don't even think you should get ac/hit/dam/etc bonuses either, because they would come from knowing how to use the shield, but I doubt that will get changed so....

I agree with this idea wholeheartedly, and think it would take maybe 2-3 lines of code to fix.

My last zerk was PoA, so I don't recall, but Shield Block should not block a haymaker if the opponent doesn't have Shield Block.

fighting a plague that haymakers damn near every round, I will agree. I fought him constantly (without the shield block skill) and he haymakered me every round without shield block and dropped 75% - 90% of my spells, though Im not sure if the code makes a differintiation there....

I think of it like you just have the shield strapped to your arm, but you've got no training in how to use it to block an attack effectively. If you get hit, it's basically just there absorbing some of the force of the attack in the same way armor is.

You said it exactly how I tried to say it earlier.

Also, remember that a lot of the protection granted by a shield is magical. That protection would exist regardless of skill at the shield itself.

With my bard, I sent an uppercut at a bmg and he blocked it because he was wearing a shield. I know for a fact they don't have the shield block ability, but he did, in fact, block my punch. The same thing happened with two of my zerks that were path of devastation. If they're wearing the shield, they can stop the blow.

I agree.

And shields do block haymaker.

With that said... Is there "any" planning at all to tone up path of devastation, or zerks in general?

I fought an invoker recently that blocked my haymaker and headbutt. I got a message saying that I couldn't get enough momentum and can't penetrate the shield. I was not slowed or under any spells. I bring this up because the same thing happened to me Vandesteene vs Ivyziou awhile back, which is a big reason why I got slaughtered and decided never to play a devastation zerk again, now I hear this is a bug afterall that never got fixed?

I thought the penetration thing was from protective shield, and just meant you failed to shatter it.

Having just played a zerk I think that is it. Headbutt to dizzy and drop protective shield, then haymaker to drop the rest, unless you choose PoA, you can haymaker right through the shield (no a guarantee) and it REALLY helps to be raged first. I never remember missing due to a physical shield, and it's been a while since I played a bard so I couldnt help concerning uppercut.

Would you honestly waste that AWESOME chance to laglock your enemy?

In my case I was a dwarf, noone was afraid to be laglocked by me. But I was also PoA so I went st8 for the haymakers after rage,
