The Professor
I don't know what it is...but I have the worst luck with computers...they seem to die at my mere touch. I go through monitors left and right...fan's will go out in the tower...wires get shorts... Was chatting away with Palwen...all of a sudden I start hearing a loud grinding and the tower was almost hot enough to burn by touch... The worst part...I know next to nothing about computers...especially not hardware...I'm not mechanically inclined.
Guest emp_newb
Sounds like something violently overheated.....

Evangelion
I agree with Emp. Sounds like a major overheat problem. Have you... 1) Opened the case and used a can of compressed air to spray all of the components of the computer, including the fan(s)? 2) Made sure that the fans are functioning properly while the computer is turned on? 3) Made sure that there no massive tangles of cables and wires inhabiting the tower, that could be blocking air flow? (These can be constrained using zip-ties) 3) Removed the CPU fan, dusted every inch of it using Q-Tips and compressed air, and replaced the thermal compound on the base? 4) If you have multiple fans, run SpeedFan to ensure that all fans are working appropriately? Once you take all these steps, in my experience, most overheating problems will go away, as most are caused by either A) Dust clogging and Fan failure. Thankfully, the fix for these problems is relatively simple and cheap - either a can of compressed air and a few zip-ties, or potentially a new CPU fan. However, you HAVE to take care of the problem now, or you will literally melt the other components of your computer, and it will just be an overly large piece of scrap metal. Guest emp_newb
I think it is gonna be loaded with dust. And probably some paste between the processor and heat sync
The Professor
Thankfully I have a friend knowledgeable in the field of computers...seems when I dusted my computer...I ended up just causing a mess inside my tower...causing another fan to stop working...after a good cleaning...all is well...FOR NOW... Thanks for the tips, I am going to use one of those compressed air can's to try and keep it in working order.
Deykari
If you think that's bad, my laptop gets so hot that the glue that holds the rubber pads to the bottom of it has melted off and the pads got stuck to my pillow, staining it black. Because I use my laptop in bed (I don't have a desk) it rests on my pillow. The weight of the laptop causes it to sink into the pillow, so that all the air ventilation around the bottom and sides is surrounded by pillow, allowing no escape for the air aside from the small top vent. Factor in that my laptop doesn't go into standby (a power management preference) and sometimes I just forget, and close my screen - thus inhibiting all possible outlets of warm air. No wonder it's a massive piece of **** now. Dey
The Professor
Ha! Labtops...I hate them as much as they hate me... No doubt, if I had a labtop, it's lifespan would be far less than my computers...

a-guitarist
Well, he was picking up his laptop one day, and dropped it. Thank god everything else still works, but the logo "Laptop" had a letter come unhinged- thus swinging upside down. a-g

a-guitarist
well, if it were on that side, it's a hinged bolt... very common in laptop computers. a-g
