a-guitarist
Just wanted to tell everyone that this is an amazing film. It is an absolutely amazing story, drama, sci-fi story (with a hint of romance) masked to the mass markets as a action movie. I may buy a BlueRay player just for when it comes out on disc. The most 'human' character in it is one of the aliens. I don't want to put a spoiler, but it takes a lot for a movie to make me feel uncomfortable watching it due to content (at one point I almost had to step away from the movie and regroup). This does it, but stays classy and well-done the whole time. There were a lot of times where I simply had to lean back and say, out loud, "Holy ****." or "Wow. Just Wow." This is now my #1 favourite movie. Most current Sci-Fi films have left me with a bad taste. This is one that cleanses the palate, most diffidently. a-g

Mattamue
I'm probably going to be drawn and quartered for this, but here goes... The movie tried to be sci-fi and political but ended up half-assing both. It's hard to get into why without discussing a lot of the plot points so I'll try to make my case as spoiler free as possible. If you don't want to know anything at all about the movie before going in then don't read what I have to say until afterward. I had little to no sympathy for the aliens. The social commentary here about mistreatment and irresponsible government or whatever they were trying to say is lost because I feel no remorse for a group of beings who are too stupid to drive their own vehicle around the galaxy. The sci-fi side of it left too much unexamined. This may be the nerd in me, but I can't abide by omissions or things left unexplained. I get the feeling that the director didn't care about the sci-fi - that he was focused more on the social commentary in the film. Since so much of technology, sociology, and whatever of the aliens was left to my imagination I spent most of the movie analyzing everything I could about them trying to get to some sort of rhyme for their reason. It never came. By leaving the sci-fi unexplained I get the feeling that it was meant to be more of a social commentary - that they didn't want to take away from their message by getting into the sci-fi too much. It works out that leaving so much unexplained draws more attention away from their message than if they would have just come out and talked about why why and why then gotten back to how much government sucks. So, points: No compassion for aliens. No reason for aliens. No focus.
