Really really hard. I spent 4 hours trying to get to the second boss and died within two minutes of fighting him.

Then I spent another 3 helping someone else kill him as a ghost and it brought me back to life, spent another 1 getting to him w/ a few ghost friends and they both died as soon as we got to him, then I spent an hour chipping away at him one or two attacks at a time.

Then I stopped playing it because it got harder.

I would play more, but the story isn't there and there's no direction and there's no equipment to strive for. It's all out there, but there's no rhyme or reason to it. The multiplayer is a cool idea, but it isn't enough to carry the game. I'd compare it to cutting yourself on a webcam and then posting about it on facebook.

If you just have to know what it's like please rent it or gamefly it first, you'll be doing yourself a favor.

i'm going to have to strongly DISagree with Mattamue here. demon's souls is an awesome game. its not your traditional modern rpg where it holds your hand and tells you where to go. its more like an old school ultima or wizardry, where you were pretty much thrust into a world, and expected to figure out how to play and where to go through experimentation and exploration. the game won't tell you up front the why's and the what's.

the equipment is also a bit different. very little of the equipment you get is bought from a store owner. mostly you have to find it hidden in various areas or get it from quests. so while it might appear at first that you have a very limited amount of equipment to get, there is actually a large variety, especially when you take into account all the customization options for your weapons (think DnD weapon enchanting).

all in all, i think it's definitely worth a purchase. the story becomes much stronger as you progress through the world, but its not a game you play solely for that reason. it is hard, but the game mechanics are geared around you dying and resurrecting. its actually not too different from a graphical mud. the story is pieced together through you pulling details out of the environment and characters, you have a large amount of freedom in which direction you want to head, the customization options for your character and equipment are near endless, and you can even PK other people.
