virus software

Mali

Recommended Posts

Windows 7 came with norton, which hogged up all my CPU. I took it off and my performance went way up, but of course now i'm open to computerized swine flu.

Does anyone have a virus protection software recommendation? I'd like one that can search and eliminate on command, without running in the background all the time.

God, kaspersky is even worse than norton :P

Mali, if you want a good anti virus it has to run in the background. Also, a good firewall is better than a good antivirus. Also, you should get a good anti spy-were, or three :P

I would suggest nod32 as antivirus, it runs on my old 512 MB ram PC, so it should go well on yours too :)

Komodo firewall.

Spybot search and destroy.

Ad-aware.

Might go even without the firewall if you got all the others installed.

What Nomak said. My company's IT guy told me you should never pay for anything, if you have to pay it's usually worse than what you're defending against. He also recommended I use Avast. It's great and free. It never bugs me, just runs in the background and updates periodically on it's own. The only time I've ever had to mess with it is when it's caught something and I had to acknowledge it, which has been a total of two times in a year.

http://www.avast.com/index

Just make sure you dl the free version.

Yep, get right along and download a virus scanner from a torrent sight. Hmm....if I wanted to infect people with a virus where would I hide it - I KNOW - in a fake file claiming to be a VIRUS SCANNER!!!

Oh wait - there are already 3209483290483209 scams via malware and torrents attempting this. Guess I'm not the first to think of this idea... *sigh*

For those who are interested:

AVG Free Edition

Malware Bytes

Super Anti-Spyware (SAS)

Can be downloaded and installed at no cost. You have to managed three programs and deal with the associated resource drain but it will protect you and give you the power to eliminate all manner of nasties. I use this setup on several clients (home users) PCs and Laptops without issue. I've used this setup to hunt down and destroy some very nasty viruses for clients as well (Cryptor springs to mind...).

Personally I use AVG Interet Security Suite (don't activate Identity Protection, it really does eat resources...). AVG used to be really good for minimal system resourse use but as its gotten bigger and 'better' its expanded what it does as well as its footprint. If you're looking for the smallest footprint AVG is not for you. Its a sacrifice I make as:

* My system has the power for me not to worry about it (if you want the specs I can tell you...).

* I trust AVG and know it does its job. I can do anything without fear of retribution of viruses.

* I run Spybot S&D Registry Protect as well. Nothing can be changed in the registry without my permission - its not fool proof but adds another layer of security ie if I'm not making changes I simply deny anything.

* SAS will allow you to lock your homepage stopping nasty redirections by viruses.

L-A

PS - going to Firefox or Opera isn't a bad idea either. IE8 is claimed to be the 'strongest' secure brower (by MS). I saw some stats last week backing it up. Whatver you do make sure you are NOT USING IE6. News articles last week should tell you why....

I'll echo what LA says here and add a link: http://www.superantispyware.com/ This has caught viruses that no other program has been able to. I had a really bad Vundo infection and this cleared it right up. It caught something and I ran it a second time in safe mode with the registry off. My comp has been clean ever since. Norton, AVG, Spybot and Adware were NOT capable of spotting and cleaning, believe me... I tried.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, win 7 32 bit has a built in firewall.

With a new update, they also introduced to my system a program called

windows defender.

This program can be run by the user to scan all files for virus's and spyware.

Since I am rejecting all virus software that runs in the background, I am pleased that microsoft included this tool to scan for damage when I please.

Thats my update, and thanks for your suggestions.
