Bad! news from Celerity

I have some bad news. The move to China wasn't good for my MUDding. The chinese police have my computer right now...I should get it back in a 2-3 weeks IF all goes well.

I am using a small laptop right now which will NOT work for PK at all. The machine itself lags and I can't type well on the keyboard. I will TRY to get a keyboard tomorrow and see if I can use it well enough but...

The worst thing though is the internet connection at my university. Very, very sproadic and SLOW. My internet randomly shuts off...it could be 30 seconds or a full week. So, even if I get my computer, it will be a huge gamble everytime I log on. I forsee many linkdeaths....and the connectivity isn't going to change as long as I am here I think...

sigh...

The good news is that I am now a university teacher. :D

Probably all the 5ES switches we taught the chinese to build when I worked for Lucent, while they brought us the best of the best in service in 1996, i.e. 3-way calling, call forward ect, they were extremely flawed in the transmission of certain types of data packets. Lucent/Bell Tech upgraded 70% of the switches in the US after we found the problem. See China would not buy the American made switches, they demanded Lucent build them a factory and let them produce their own, in 2000 in the wake of the technology stocks crash, the hard hit asian market was resistant to buy into any "new" Ideas. Unfortunately for much of China, the switch upgrade performed in the US in 2002 was not an optional upgrade. If we did not change the switches then mass numbers of users would unqualify the system resources. My Guess Cel, is as the number of phone lines increases over there, unless they upgrade the 5ES switches, your troubles will increase. The 5ES switch looks like a computer tower, 5 feet tall, three feet wide, and twenty to forty feet in length. Upgrading requires changing out one plug and play component board 9 inches by fourteen inches long for each 10,000 customers. The trouble is, Bell Tech asks $375,000 per board, In case your wondering, I maintained the robot that made this particular board for many years.

Indeed. Have you seen the episode with the drug-smuggling Brittish woman who brings her unsuspecting male friend on a drug run? They both get locked up in Chilean prison, even though the man had no idea what she was up to.

He was not happy; I was thoroughly amused.
