Ilanthas
Hello all, I rolled up myself a monk and have some questions. 1. What is the best way to train their defenses? Like first, second parry, and dodge. 2. Where would be a good place to train them? So far I am liking them. I dont hit near as hard as I do with my rangers but my monk is turning out to be fun to play. Thanks for any and all help.
Enethier
im not sure if its the BEST, but its an idea i had when reading the training guide. dont put any practices into dodge until the others are mastered. master first parry first, by not putting anything into second parry. once first is trained, put pracs in second. hold something in your main hand so that you cant use it to parry. once you have mastered second, then put points into dodge and practice dodge. Twinblades713
Yes. Don't train dodge until everything is mastered. Scarecrows. By extension, don't train first parry until you have second parry mastered, but that takes quite awhile. Also, once you're trained... you will hit MUCH harder than your ranger did. If you are serious, I can give you a quick run down of skill training. For defenses, alot of people tell you do them one at a time. I have tried on many things, several times, and found that with high training classes, you master them all at once WHILE doing other things. For example. Training air thrash, while doing defenses, and flying anat is a GOOD THING. Guild guards will get your anatomies to around 70, you can do the rest through pks/high level mobs. Pking/sparring is MUCH faster than mobs. Anatomies are key. Stances will master as you use them (except tiger, **** tiger stance, slow mastering crap) things you want to master: Stances, all of them Anatomies, all of them defenses, all of them trip air thrash chii bolt, and chii by association kick, I recommend NOT practicing kick, and wait til you get double kick, Practice double kick twice, and kick once. You will master them both much better this way, as well as gain ranks while stuck in that level 30 zone. Weapons. Such a pain, but such a serious threat. If you get into cabals often, I recommend doing it with cabal points. Now on the other side, if you want to be a power gamer about it, roll an adventurer, and master the weapons as an adventurer, then simply remort into a monk. Monks require alot of attention payed to your aff list, knowing when to empower what. I wish you the best of luck, and also highly recommend reading the essay related to monks. jibber
Tiger stance goes up each time you hit a chakera, or do 'twin tiger claw' while you're IN tiger stance. Probably the easiest stance to master, hands down.
L-A
roll an adventurer' date=' and master the weapons as an adventurer, then simply remort into a monk.[/quote'] One of several reasons adventurer prof learn should be capped at 80-85%. samag08
I would say cap it at 90% since it does take a decent amount of time to roll/rank to where practicing those skills and mastering them would make that much of a time difference from just doing the old fashioned route. f0xx
One of several reasons adventurer prof learn should be capped at 80-85%. L-A They have like only one or two weapons a monk can keep. Also, as an adventurer you roll less. It makes up in the end.

I have always had good luck going into horse and fighting a bunch of scarecrows and crows. Usually master all defenses within a hour and gives you a leg up getting horse mastered. If you practice second parry twice and parry/dodge once it will also help. They will all be mastered about the same time and it will put a couple pracs back in your pocket. And, I don't think anyone has mentioned how important it is to master disarm. I've found that in a lot of situations at lvl 50 range, you will want to use dragon. f0xx
Disarm and shield disarm are vital. Master on a PC while training anatomies, preferably a blademaster.

mya
Don't practice defences untill you get second parry. Then practice second parry and Master it. Then practice first Parry and Master it. Then Practice Dodge and Master it. Trust me, the wait for the defenses is worth it. You will go insane otherwise. Airtrash, train at Scarecrows. You can air trash several aircrows per tic. Trip is trained here to. Anatomies. Train those from PK. Get a Healer and just hit him while holding Medalions to drop STR and Damage, but keeping a decent Hitroll. This will take a huge investiment of time. So the higher ranked you are, the faster you will learn. Typicaly I have had people master anatomies from me, in 1 hour to 1.5 hours. Or you can get an Elf to apply for Monk. Even I wound not mind playing a Elf Monk.

mya
That is like paddling a canoe across the ocean. It's more like crossing a river on the back of a T-Rex or crossing the same river on the back of a Turtle. Sure the Turtle is safest, but it's a lot slower. And a little excitement and knowing the grim reaper intimately is always interesting.

mya
It's easy. Train the defences in inverse order and suffer a little PK danger from not having defences. Or spend hours at the scarecrows getting that Second Parry to mastery.

mya
Better Read Than Dead: Virigoth's Warrior Guide "Skills to Master (*ADV*): As you are a warrior and it is the use of weapons that defines you, strive to master all of your weapons and defenses. It will be the use of various weapon types that win you the fights later on, so start early and get all of them to 100%. Those whom wish to save time on mastering riposte, should NOT PRACTICE dodge, until they learn riposte and keep a single weapon at 1%. Then once you have gained riposte, remove shields, wield the 1% weapon and fight mobs." http://forum.theforsakenlands.org/showthread.php?t=2 I bet, if I took the time to search the old Forum56 I would find the same advice on monks.
