Imoutgoodbye
Okay, so, I'm completely confused by the Financial Aid Department at my college. They've turned me away a second time because I haven't got an award letter (apparently this letter is going to explain everything and it comes from the college), but I need to figure this out NOW. Here's what I've got for the year according to my online student account: Source Amount Action Federal Pell Grant $8,325.00 Accepted Federal SEOG $600.00 Accepted Total Estimated Funds Available $8,925.00 Now, here's what I was given to work with for the Fall Semester upcoming: $2,975.00 After paying for classes, I have this for books: $715 If I'm attending classes for Fall and Winter semesters....wtf is the rest of my money for if the car breaks down?!?! EDIT: I've also noticed that if I double the amount for this Fall semester to add in the Winter semester, it doesn't come to the total of my Pell and Federal. Croyvern
This is how professional students exist my friend. If I understand, your thinking dang tis is too much money. But, college is full time, meaning it will be hard for you to carry full time hours at work. So, the grant is higher than you need, big deal, you will find you need that mooney. Also, the classes your taking cost about half what mine cost me ten years ago. The government does not discriminate just because you are going to a university with lower hourly rates. I took my classes at Oklahome State University in Stillwater OK. Approx 290 dollars a credit hour, Oklahoma University in Norman, only an hour away(much closer) was 760 dollars a credit hour, The One has blessed you Rev, but like I said, the "extra" funds will be used on things you are not thinking of, a new computer, special calculators, trade tools, fuel for travel, food, lodging and more. Let your mind be at peace. All is as it should be.
Imoutgoodbye
Well, that's it. I KNOW I need the extra money, so why isn't it showing up as available to me yet? It's like they're rationing it to me in some form I don't understand. I was hoping half applied to Fall, half to Winter, with checks cut to me so I can upkeep car maintenance, gas, and whatever else I might need for school. But it's looking like I'm only gonna have maybe a $100 check cut to me at the start of the semester. As for working, yeah, my budget won't allow me to stop working full time, especially with my rent increasing next month. Low income apartments my ***.... Imoutgoodbye
remember you gotta pay that **** off Federal Pell Grant = Free money. Loans must be paid back AFTER graduation (some accrue interest while in school, some the government pays the interest on while you're in school) and you have a six month grace period after commencement. Considering I'll be making about an extra 10k a year, I have no problems with taking this money.
Dizz
Here's how it works. There are two payments. One at the beginning of the semester and the other one 6-8 weeks in. Any money over and above tuition gets mailed to you. It also takes about a month or so for the college to sort out the FA info. I'm still waiting on my colleges response even though I got accepted by FAFSA. I have until Fall to worry about it. Shop around for books. Your bookstore MAY be cheapest, but probably not. Look at the cost of buying books then reselling versus renting. I actually made a profit with one book by buying it at Amazon and selling it to the college bookstore. I got $20 out of that. Bookstores generally buy back at half the original used cost, but only if the college intends to use it for the next semester. Kyzarius
I bought all my books for my MIS degree from roomates and friends who had taken the classes already.

The-Nameless
meant the loans I've got over $6k left at $500 a month, almost there. Meanwhile for the last 7 years I have had an extra 500 dollars a month for beer, cheap women, random excursions cross country, and a plethora of cars. I never understood going to college to make that extra 250k across your avg work time. You come out of college 4-8 years behind the curve, and typically 20-100k in debt. Personally Im one of those specialized training people. I always felt in high school I was wasting time. I did very well, could have gone to college, but opted for navy. Things there did not pan out sadly, and nothing that was within my control, so I joined the workforce and have been a disgruntled worker be in the cubicle that is my life ever since For those of you already making assumptions, I was unable to join the Navy, or any armed service, because of a heart condition called Wolf-Parkinsons-White where basically my heart has an extra electrical pathway. So when the control impulse goes from the Atria, to the Ventricles it can arrive too soon, which means that my beart will beat prematurely. It is really not 1/10th as serious as it sounds, I was VERY physical in school, and even my early jobs. Just one of those "unacceptable irregularities" I did not even apply for a school hehe. America has created a serious cyclical system of debt.
Celerity
It all depends on what you want to do and what you want to experience in life. For many, an undergrad/grad degree is a necessity.
Imoutgoodbye
Got it figured out. The college assumes I'm taking summer courses, so it's spread out over three semesters. Hopefully I can get them to split that third amongst the other two because I don't have to take summer courses. I'd like to have SOME time with my family.
